I’ve read that we have to look at any biographical information about (Mary) Edmonia Lewis with a critical eye. She was in control of her own narrative, so it’s unclear how factually accurate sources are, especially with the distance of time and without much contemporary confirmation. Look her up. It’s an interesting story, and it’s the one she wanted told.
