Woke up to rain this morning. It wasn’t coming down hard, but it was definite and it was steady and so any plans to go out with the camera were scuttled, for the time being.
The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns. We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.
The afternoon arrived, the rain had stopped, I had an errand or two to run, off I went, and here ya go! Because you never know what you might see.
First of note was this tall tree turning fall colors. It really caught my eye, so I had to catch a snap!
After stopping at the library to turn in a book and put another on hold, I pedaled over to my old haunt, Dellinger’s Pond. A White-lined Sphinx Moth was out and about, being pretty busy gathering nectar off the wild Sweet Pea, and I managed a few acceptable in-flight shots.
On the way back home I took a peak in at the Outdoor Classroom. There’s progress on the gate repair.
July 26. In this photo the old gate posts are still standing, but the gate, which was falling off its hinges due to age and wood rot, has been taken away. It was definitely a safety hazard. I suppose I can give myself a pat on the back here, because I was the person who reported the broken-down gate to the Feather River Land Trust, the organization in stewardship of this property. The very next day the gate was removed (safety hazard mitigated!) along with some of the split-rail fencing.
Here you can see the concrete pads and modern metal brackets just very recently installed, where the new gate will be going in. Photo taken September 1, 2023.
I would say this is going to be an improvement over the old method of just digging a hole and planting a post. Gotta move with the times and keep up with the building codes.
Ho hum. That brought me right back close to home, and all I had left was a stop at the grocery store. Ah, but one duck was flying right overhead, and I watched it come in to a very small pondlet just outside the classroom perimeter. I snuck around and it obliged with a nice pose.
Hey. You didn’t think you were going to get away with a Daily Bucket from funningforrest without a bird in it, did you?
Mallard hen
Now it’s your turn.
What’s up in your world, nature and changes, that you have observed lately?
Let us know in the comments and as always please include your location, and photos if you got ‘em!
