From CTVNews (Canadian Press):
The Canadian Border Services Agency is improving the perimeter fences, gate controls and road infrastructure at 11 border crossings between the United States and Canada following the "Freedom Convoy" protests blockaded several crossings last year.
Last year, while COVID-19 was ravaging Canada, the United States, and the Rest of the Planet, some self-described “protesters” decided that they really, really, really didn’t like the COVID-19 public health restrictions that Canada had put in place to try to, you know, address the worldwide crisis. So they blocked several ports of entry into Canada, and did so ostensibly to show solidarity with the ruffians who occupied the streets of downtown Ottawa and the area around the Canadian Parliament.
As a result of this, er, “protesting,” Canada and Canadian businesses lost a lot of money (which was probably the blockaders’ intent). According to Transport Canada (Canada’s governmental department in charge of regulating road, rail, marine, and air transportation in Canada), as much as $3.9 billion in trade activity was halted because of the “protesters’” blockades. Now, that figure is in Canadian dollars, but it’s still a pretty damn large chunk of change.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau subsequently decided to invoke the Emergencies Act, which was a pretty damn big deal. The blockade was one of the things that led to invoking the Emergencies Act.
Invoking the Emergencies Act
The Canadian Press piece does not go into detail as to which particular border crossings will be affected or how the adopted measures would affect future blockade activity. The Canadian Press was also a wee bit vague as to what improvements to “perimeter fences, gate controls and road infrastructure” entail, but some of the lesser improvements include things like “speed bumps, closed-circuit television upgrades, building-access controls and improved lighting.” Knowing Canada, it is unlikely that any of the improvements would include things like moats, barbed wire, and machine gun nests (border-protection measures favoured by many in the USA).
The message should be clear: You truckers going from the USA into Canada, and from Canada into the USA, don’t try to pull that kind of blockading nonsense from now on.
