Welcome to the Street Prophets Coffee Hour cleverly hidden at the intersection of religion and politics. This is an open thread where we can share our thoughts and comments about the day. The Cashmere Museum in Cashmere, Washington has a large natural history section with displays of taxidermy, ornithology, and geological specimens. Included are exhibits on bird nests and bird eggs.
Bird Nests
According to the display:
“There are almost as many ways to build nests and as many materials from which to construct them as there are species to build them. Mud, wood chips, feathers, stones, twigs and grass are among the popular substances used to build nests. More unusual items include such things as pins, papers, wires, golf balls and bottles. A nest may only a depression in the grass or an elaborate hanging structure but it provides safety from predators and close proximity to food and often shelter against extreme weather.”
Bird Eggs
According to the display:
“Generally, egg size is related to that of the bird that lays it. Eggs laid on sea edges are often sharply tapered. If they roll, they roll in tight circles and do not fall off. Differences in color seem to mean little, except that species camouflage eggs laid on the ground. White eggs often below to birds the nest in holes or burrows—their conspicuousness is no problem.”
