Trump at Gettysburg [1]

Watching the split screens of DeSantis’ and McConnell’s public remarks yesterday sent an oratorical shiver through my nethers. Mid shiver I began to reflect on great moments of oration through history. Don’t judge how a person daydreams. Great oratory is usually a combination of occasion, message, and messenger. Fearing nothing but fear, asking not what your county, peace in our time…

But what of truly great orators? As a historian I’ve often wondered if they were just beneficiaries of a singular moment in time, or if the power of their oration could shine through regardless of epoch.

Could Churchill impose himself on the current House of Representatives, could Cicero overpower Khrushchev in the Kitchen Debate, or Bismarck announce peace with honor in ’73?

I dunno, although I suppose AI will soon.

On the other hand, could a powerful moment matched with eloquent prose uplift an otherwise hideous speaker? OK, not just a hideous speaker, a horrible faux-human thing masquerading as a human.

Ok, I mean Trump. I mean Trump at Gettysburg… God Forgive me.
