Trump: "Impeach the BUM!" McCarthy: "Yes, sir!" [1]

Less than six hours ago, Trump demanded that the House impeach Joe Biden: Trump Demands Republicans Impeach Biden:

Said Trump: “Biden is a Stone Cold Crook-You don’t need a long INQUIRY to prove it, it’s already proven.” He added: “These lowlifes Impeached me TWICE (I WON!), and Indicted me FOUR TIMES – For NOTHING! Either IMPEACH the BUM, or fade into OBLIVION. THEY DID IT TO US!”

Around that same moment (give or take; timestamps are when the story was posted), CNN reported that McCarthy starts to plot Biden impeachment strategy while GOP skeptics remain:

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and top Republicans have begun to strategize about how to move forward with an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden this fall – the latest sign that the House GOP is seriously laying the groundwork to initiate rare proceedings against the current president. In recent weeks, McCarthy has privately told Republicans he plans to pursue an impeachment inquiry into Biden and hopes to start the process by the end of September, according to multiple GOP sources familiar with the conversations. While McCarthy has already publicly threatened to launch an inquiry if allegations from IRS whistleblowers hold up or if the Biden administration does not cooperate with requests related to House Republicans’ Hunter Biden probe, sources say that McCarthy has sent even stronger signals about his intentions behind closed doors.

McCarthy doesn’t have 218 votes to impeach, but it’s not clear that he needs a formal vote to get an inquiry going. But even that has its problems:

[O]ne GOP lawmaker, granted anonymity to speak more freely, offered an even blunter assessment: “There’s no evidence that Joe Biden got money, or that Joe Biden, you know, agreed to do something so that Hunter could get money. There’s just no evidence of that. And they can’t impeach without that evidence. And I don’t I don’t think the evidence exists.”

Of course, an “inquiry” isn’t going to be enough for Trump: “You don’t need a long INQUIRY to prove it.” What matters to Trump can be seen in his “tell” at the end: “THEY DID IT TO US!” This is exactly in keeping with his earlier infamous post: "If you go after me, I'm coming after you!" He is increasingly desperate — and increasing obvious about it — to get Biden impeached for something, anything, evidence be damned, proof be damned. He wants revenge, he wants the man who beat him to be humiliated the way he was humiliated, he wants a distraction from the trials (while at the same time playing up his arrest and indictment, but whoever said he was sane?).

McCarthy is not going to get 218 votes to impeach; there are enough Republicans in vulnerable seats who cannot afford to go along (they’ll probably lose those seats either way in any case). In the meantime, the Mar-A-Lago staff should make sure to keep all bottles of ketchup out of Trump’s reach.
