Collectively, the fossil fuel companies make about a billion dollars profit daily. So they can well afford to throw a few tens of million annually at creating disinformation to sow the seeds of doubt -- concerning the severity of the problem their products are causing -- among the general public, as well as giving cover to politicians in the form of plausible deniability. This is primarily accomplished by funneling dark money to right wing so-called 'think tanks' like the Cato Institute and the Heritage Foundation.
17 years on from the release of his seminal film that captured the public's attention about anthropogenic (i.e. man-made) global warming, An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore is still passionately committed to pointing out that we've yet to do anything substantive to address the problem. This Ted Talk he gave just a few weeks ago makes for compelling viewing:

In What the Fossil Fuel Industry Doesn't Want You to Know, he makes it plain how the industry is still employing the same 'greenwashing' tactics for decades now to make it look like they're doing something about the problem, when they are instead actively trying to deflect any serious action to fix the problem long enough to allow the extraction of every single last bit of fossil fuel from the Earth for the enrichment of their shareholders, damn the consequences to the planet and humankind.
