Goin Fishin

People I admire:

Rachel Maddow-----fly fishing

Shane Van Boening (number one USA pool player)----ice fishing

Barack Obama----trout stream and fly fishing

As kids we fished for perch in Lake Michigan. If successful we could sometimes get our moms to cook them, but this was too much work in a town with six taverns on every block which served great perch every Friday (99% Catholic town).

From a small boat off Bodega Bay I caught my first and only Salmon. Cooked that and served it with pride to family and guests. Back when fresh Pacific Salmon was reasonably priced, I remember standing at the checkout with my order and the guy behind me, sort of a wise guy, tauntingly said “How you gonna cook that?” “Olive oil and Old Bay, BBQ 6 minutes on one side, 5 minutes on the other.” All he could say was “That’s right.”

One of the most delicious fish servings I have ever had was a huge cut of Chilean Sea Bass, 4 inches thick and cooked perfectly all the way through. This was previously known as Patagonian Toothfish, but some marketing department improved the image and sales as well; now very pricey.

The three most-consumed seafoods in the USA are shrimp, salmon, and tuna. Fish and other seafood are the major sources of healthful long-chain omega-3 fats and are also rich in other nutrients such as vitamin D and selenium, high in protein, and low in saturated fat. We enjoy most seafood, but never octopus, sine we saw one in a tank exhibiting more personality than any politician .New Yorker-Why Not Eat Octopus? If you don’t like fish, you can get fish oil pills, which Mrs. side pocket is sure to give me every day we don’t have fish.

There’s a whole conversation about climate change and sealife, which we’ll be covering more and more as time goes on, but some topics are too vast for a quotidian KTK, I think.
