Why was Trump so desperate to retain the presidency? [1]

Recently someone on Quora asked me this question www.quora.com/..., here is my answer:
At the time he was anxious about being charged with tax crimes, and being prosecuted for all the obstruction exposed by the Mueller investigation, once he was out of office and no longer immune because of the presidency. Mueller: Trump could be charged with obstruction of justice after leaving office thehill.com/...
“Special counsel Robert Mueller said Wednesday that charging President Donald Trump with a crime was ‘not an option’ because of federal rules, but he used his first public remarks on the Russia investigation to emphasize that he did not exonerate the president. ‘If we had had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so,’ Mueller declared…Mueller made clear that his team never considered indicting Trump because the Justice Department prohibits the prosecution of a sitting president.” (emphasis mine) Mueller declares his Russia report did not exonerate Trump apnews.com/…
He feared losing all his money to fines for tax crimes and other crimes and maybe even his freedom. So I believe he thought that since he could convince his followers of anything, he decided that all he had to do was claim election fraud and the courts would also side with the President of the United States as the pre-eminent authority and order endless investigations looking for evidence that he knew they’d never find.
All that hoped for delay would have kept him in office and given him time to pull out of NATO as he’d promised Putin (so Putin could easily enter Europe thru the back door), and dismantle the federal government and install Trump loyalists by implementing Schedule F; both of which he didn’t want do in his first term because he knew it would make him and his Republican loyalists lose votes and he needed BOTH houses for his plan to work.
"Trump signed an executive order in October 2020 which established a new Schedule F employment category for federal employees. It was rescinded by President Biden shortly after he took office in 2021. But back in March of 2022, Trump floated the possibility of going after the federal workforce. "We will pass critical reforms making every executive branch employee fire-able by the president of the United States," he said at a rally in South Carolina. "The deep state must and will be brought to heel." How Trump could reimpose "Schedule F" in 2025 www.axios.com/...
During a second term he planned to do that and dismantle the federal government and install Trump loyalists in the DOJ, FBI, CIA, IRS, etc.; by implementing Schedule F so as to convert democracy into his own private dictatorship, staffed with his followers. He hoped and fantasized that he would have the backing of Republican white supremacists (because they feared the rise of people of color voting democrat), with dreamed of majorities in both houses of Congress; that would allow him to pass measures to alter the US Constitution so as to allow multiple terms for POTUS.
“Chinese President Xi Jinping recently (written in 2018) consolidated power. Trump told the gathering: “He’s now president for life. President for life. And he’s great.” Trump added, “I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll give that a shot someday.” Trump says maybe U.S. will have a president for life someday www.pbs.org/...
He envied and wanted to emulate Putin's power (and Kim Jong Un, Xi Jinping, Victor Orban, Hitler, Mussolini, etc. whose paths to power he studied intensely and so often praised them publicly to groom his followers into accepting him as their ‘strong man’ leader). He wanted that kind of power to keep running for president for life; just as Putin does in Russia (controlling the Russian media and assassinating anyone who tries to thwart him); he too wanted to control the media and be president for life, just like Putin. He envied all those so-called 'strong men' and wanted to make the US into a system that would let him and his progeny retain power indefinitely, and so go down in history as the most powerful US leader of all time.
