Morning, Y’all, and welcome to another Downheah edition of Saturday Morning Garden Blogging. We’re here every Saturday Morning at 9am Eastern; please join us! Just a quick shoutout to new member AnnieJo for her first ever SMGB diary last week; it was a beauty! You can see it HERE...

I won’t post a picture of how The Patch looks currently; it’s just too depressing. That being said, it was a pretty good tomato season; we put several gallons in the freezer. Back in March, I did a diary on my 2023 garden plans; see it HERE. So, I grew out 11 plants each of the Sully Volunteer and the Sully Dwarf #3. Here are some of the Volunteers...

#6 and #9 not pictured for some reason; I lost #11 to disease early on...

#8 was the only plant to produce fruit that was larger and “lobed”, (it produced only the one) as compared to all the others, which only produced small round fruit. #8 also turned out to be a “pink” tomato (red flesh/clear epidermis). Note that #8 also produced smaller, round fruit; pink as well…

#9 also turned out to be pink, and produced only round fruit, but they were a bit larger than the rest. Both #8 and #9 had good flavor and decent texture/mouth “feel”. All the other plants were subpar in all those categories; their flavor wasn’t terrible, but the texture and mouth feel was pretty bad. I just can’t abide a tomato that is mealy and/or “mushy”. None of those Volunteer segregates will be going forward in the future… The Sully Volunteer seeds also produced a dwarf segregate. I grew out 4 of those plants; they were also “blah” and will not be going forward…. Next year, Volunteer gets a new name; Sully’s Pink.

The Sully Dwarf #3 turned out to be a really nice tomato. About ping pong ball size and yellow when ripe. The flavor was crisp, and had a nice “pop”. Texture and mouth feel was very nice; I snacked on quite a few of these when out in The Patch!! They had pretty consistent flavor and texture across all 11 plants, but the 2 in-ground plants produced slightly larger fruit...

It eventually reached 4 ft...

Nice fruit set.

Going forward next year, Sully Dwarf #3 also gets a new name; Sully’s Dwarf Gina. I hope our own GCNY doesn’t mind….

Need to get these saved seeds into their envelopes and labelled...

Looking ahead to next season, Big Beef (my main producer) will be back, along with these 2:

County Agent

Ukrainian Purple

Very meaty with an excellent taste!

It’s also been a pretty good pepper season; lots pickled and lots in the freezer. I’ll be doing another diary next month about that subject.

Well, that’s about it from Downheah this hot and humid Saturday Morning. I think our heat index is gonna be somewhere North of 1120 this afternoon; looks like an “indoorsy” kind of day for me! Please join us in the comments and let us know what’s going on in your garden!!
