Why conspiracies survive - a story from the gym conversation with a Faux News watcher [1]

I had an interesting conversation yesterday evening as I was watching the Trump motorcade on both CNN and Faux News in my gym (Faux News is always on unless I turn that TV to sports - which I always try to do). The majority of the gym members are students at one of the more politically active evangelical colleges in America, the curriculum includes:

The Scriptures Inspired, One True God and The Trinity, The Deity of Jesus Christ, The Fall and Salvation of Man, The Present-Day Ministry of the Holy Spirit, Divine Healing, The Return of Jesus Christ for His Church, and Heaven & Hell.

This fellow member is someone I talk to frequently - no politics - and was standing there as he commented "this is all just bulls$#t, why is this even allowed to happen?".

The conversation then went:

Me: "Should these people just be allowed to try to overturn an election?"

Him: "There isn't anything there"

Me: "what about the tape of (TFG) calling the Secretary of State asking him to find 17,800 votes for (TFG) so he wins Georgia?"

Him: "What tape?"

Me: "They have a tape of (TFG) and some of these defendants calling the Georgia Secretary of State asking him to 'find' votes"

Him: "I never heard that. Why isn't that getting played every day on a loop?"

Me: "(Faux) News has never mentioned it. Other media have quoted it."

Him: "I never saw that. Why isn't CNN playing it every hour?"

There is the issue - this person, who is personable and intelligent, claims to have no knowledge of the tape. He indicated he was going to go look for information on it. I also mentioned the fake electors and the fraud charges. He was shaking his head like he had never heard of them.

The chasm is broad and deep. The barrier to information is wide.
