The Republican party deserves a new mascot [1]

Democrats are donkeys and Republicans are elephants. Those have been the two unofficial mascots for America’s two major political parties for over a century. It was the great political cartoonist Thomas Nast who helped popularize these characterizations, which last to this day.
I want to focus on the Republican elephant here, because as far as I’m concerned, that party lost the privilege of being compared to that magnificent beast years ago. They deserve something else. A snake or a rat might seem like a good pick, but even snakes can be useful. So I offer up what I think ought to be the new mascot of the Republican party:
The fire ant.
1. Fire ants can be destructive to crops and occasionally livestock or even humans. They are estimated to cause over $5 billion in damage every year.
2. They tend to be very aggressive, readily attacking anything that is perceived as a threat to the nest. If fire ant workers sense danger, they will not hesitate to go after the intruder.
3. They act with a hive mind. Ants work for the hive, in particular for the queen, even at great cost to themselves. They value their hive much more than they value themselves or other beings outside the colony.
4. They hurt like hell. If you’ve ever had the unfortunate experience of stepping in a fire ant bed, you know this. They seem like their only interaction with us is to hurt us.
5. They’re invasive. They don’t belong here.
