Vivek Ramaswamy is a total poser. [1]

In last night’s debate Tim Scott mentioned his background, as he often does, growing up in poverty in South Carolina. His mother, a nursing assistant, worked double shifts to pay the bills. You may disagree with him on 95% of the issues but his story is inspiring. And it is legit.

In last night’s debate Vivek Ramaswamy said “I didn’t grow up with money” trying to portray himself as a kid with a similar story. It’s fake. His mother was a physician and his father an engineer and then a patent attorney for General Electric. That kind of dual professional income almost certainly put his family in the top one percent of income earners in the United States.

This isn’t the first time poor little Vivek has implied a rags to riches story, it has been a regular part of his campaign. He ties the false narrative into his love for Eminem’s music. From a July Politico article:

“He’s (Eminem) growing up in the trailers, with a single mom, and he wants to make it. He’s going to use the moment to do it. He feels like he’s going to use the moment to do it, he seizes it and then he makes it happen, and I thought it was a pretty cool story,” Ramaswamy recalled. “I didn’t grow up in a trailer, but I also didn’t grow up in the same circumstances that most of my peers at Harvard did, either.”

So he grew up very privileged in a “one percenter” family with two highly educated parents. How were his circumstances so different from his peers? Despite his other privilege, he didn’t have white privilege. And his family’s recent immigrant status made his circumstances different. But wait, acknowledging white privilege and that immigrant families face challenges others don’t is pretty woke. I thought he was anti-woke. Confusing. Just like a rich kid pretending he grew up poor. I guess he’s just a poser.
