Trump is a Republican celebrity unlike anyone else.
Donald Trump won the first 2024 GOP Primary Debate last night in Milwaukee, Wisconsin — even as he wasn’t anywhere near the debate stage. As the article in the Atlantic magazine points out below, Trump is in a class by himself and in complete control of the Republican party.
Everyone has their own take on why certain candidates did better than others. What matters is how it is perceived within the Republican Party as, for now, it’s an intraparty matter. It is irrelevant to a large degree as to what Democrats think of various candidates and how they performed last night.
They Should Be Worried
It is probably a safe bet that most of the people polled were GOP activists or Never Trumpers looking for an alternative and not your average MAGA Trump supporter. The MAGA faithful are definitely not looking for a Trump alternative; long ago, they determined that Trump is their guy. Period.
According to a post-debate poll of only Republican primary and caucus voters who actually watched the debate conducted by Washington Post-538-Ipsos, here are the results of how the candidates fared.
Ron DeSantis — 29%.
Vivek Ramaswamy — 26%.
Nikki Haley — 15%.
Mike Pence — 7%.
Chris Christie — 4%.
Tim Scott — 4%.
Asa Hutchinson — 1%.
Doug Burgum — 1%.
None of These/Don’t Know — 13%.
At this stage, few political pundits expect DeSantis to win the nomination, let alone an inexperienced political newcomer like Ramaswamy. DeSantis comes across as a phony whose interpersonal and communications skills leave a lot to be desired. As for Ramaswamy, he is a joke of a candidate. After all of this is over, he might get hired as an entertainer by FOX News or One America News.
It is possible that two of the eight candidates present last night in Milwaukee will not make the cut for the next debate scheduled for September 27th at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California.
The Times They Are a-Changin’ x AMERICA: THEN & NOW by Cagle Webmaster pic.twitter.com/fE5XFRgCK1 — The Cagle Post (@CaglePost) August 24, 2023 A Party of One Peter Wehner: “Tonight, Trump will be booked in Fulton County, Georgia, for his role in attempting to overturn the state’s 2020 presidential-election results. It’s his fourth indictment; he faces 91 felony counts. That’s four more indictments and 91 more felony counts than all the previous presidents in American history combined. Trump was also found liable earlier this year for sexual abuse. Yet for Republican voters, saying this conduct shouldn’t be normalized is delivering fighting words.” “The reason is simple: Trump is a revered figure among the GOP base. He is also a political colossus in the Republican Party; no candidate has ever lost the nomination of his party with a polling lead like his. And after Trump is fingerprinted and weighed, and likely has a mug shot taken, at the Rice Street Jail, he is going to be viewed even more favorably by many Republicans. He is, for them, a martyred saint.” x One week to hand himself in (sigh, again)#USPolitics #Trump #auspol pic.twitter.com/2sZDp7zj44 — Pat Hudson Cartoons (@phudsonink) August 19, 2023 Attribution for the above cartoon: Pat Hudson Cartoons @phudsonink The Devil Went Down to Georgia Well, the Devil went down to Georgia, he was looking for a soul to steal
He was in a bind, 'cause he was way behind, he was willing to make a deal… The Devil opened up his case, and he said, "I'll start this show"
And fire flew from his finger tips as he rosined up his bow
And he pulled the bow across the strings, and it made an evil hiss
Then a band of demons joined in, and it sounded something like this But when the Devil finished, Willis said, "You know you're pretty good old son
But you just flap down in that chair right there, I'm gonna show you how it's done" __ with apologies to Charlie Daniels. You Reap What You Sow x TRUMP AT FULTON JAIL by Bob Englehart pic.twitter.com/SkIsWMXAoB — The Cagle Post (@CaglePost) August 24, 2023

Diary Poll
With the exception of perhaps Dwight D. Eisenhower — who also happened to be the victorious Supreme Allied Commander during World War II of military forces from multiple countries that defeated Fascism — most of you probably don’t care much about any of the Republican US Presidents that followed him.
Even so, do choose one from the ones listed on the poll. Feel free to offer the reasons for your choice.
