Gym Jordan Wants to Know What Willis Knows [1]

The Hill is reporting that Gym Jordan™ is making yet another demand of Trump’s prosecutors to tell him everything they know:

Jim Jordan launches probe into Georgia Trump prosecution

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) fired off a sweeping request for documents dealing with former President Trump’s prosecution for election interference in Georgia, asking Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) to turn over all records relating to the case. Sent hours before Trump is expected to surrender at the Fulton County Jail, the letter cites “concerns about [Willis’s] motivation” in bringing the case and suggests her sprawling racketeering indictment against the former president and 18 others highlights “the threat that such state prosecutions can pose to the operations of the federal government.”

He also wants to know if Willis has been in communication (ie, “coordination”) with Jack Smith, though Willis has denied any contact.

This is a fishing expedition with two purposes in mind, as I see it. The first, obviously, is to cast doubt on the prosecution’s case by imputing “motives” to the DA. The second, I believe, is that he hopes to pass on Willis’s strategy to Trump. (I have no actual evidence for this, but it fits the pattern of previous GOP congressmen revealing to Trump things they learned. Remember Devin Nunes?)

Jordan has done this before —

Jordan’s panel has frequently sought information on criminal probes into Trump at key junctures. He sent a letter to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) before he had even brought charges against Trump, writing that he was “reportedly about to engage in an unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority.” He’s also sent two letters to Attorney General Merrick Garland concerning Smith’s investigation.

— though I don’t recall that any of the others gave him anything.

Jordan’s justification for all this is the “chilling effect” it could have on future presidents:

“The threat of future state prosecution for official acts may dissuade federal officers from effectively performing their official duties and responsibilities.”

Of course, the whole point of all these indictments is that Trump was not performing his official duties (which included “taking care that the laws shall be faithfully executed”), but was committing crimes. If these trials dissuade future federal officials from doing the same, all the better.

Still, by asking for the prosecution’s case before it’s even presented, Jordan runs the risk of himself being accused of obstructing justice. Given the high bar of Congressional oversight and immunity, I don’t expect a court of law to consider that, but in the court of public opinion, I find him guilty.
