It’s time for a brief musical interlude to while away the hours while waiting for the day’s main event — former President Donald Trump’s surrender at the Fulton County Jail in response to an indictment charging him with racketeering and conspiracy in an effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia.

It’s clear that today everyone has their minds on what will soon be happening in Atlanta. So take it away, Ray!

The song was actually written back in 1930 by pianist/actor Hoagy Carmichael. The lyrics are by Stuart Gorrell, who became Vice President of Chase Bank and never wrote any more song lyrics. Carmichael did have a sister named Georgia, but he said he wrote the song after bandleader Frankie Trumbauer suggested that he write a song about the state of Georgia.

Here’s Carmichael’s original 1930 recording of the song with with Bix Beiderbecke on cornet and Eddie Lang on guitar:

Brother Ray, as he called himself, was born in Albany. Georgia. A civil rights activist, Charles fought against Jim Crow laws in the south, and refused to perform at a theater in Augusta, Georgia, in 1961, when he learned the seating was to be segregated, according to Smithsonian Music. He was sued for breach of contract and fined.

Charles recorded his iconic version of “Georgia On My Mind” in 1960. His soulful version is full of passion and emotion as he pays tribute to his home state whose government at the time was defiantly trying to maintain its racist legacy. In March 1979, the state legislature made Charles’ version of “Georgia on My Mind” the official state song, and he was invited to perform it at the state Capitol.

Donald Trump will probably be flying to Georgia on his private jet. But the song “Midnight Train to Georgia” performed by Gladys Knight & The Pips did have one line that fits Trump: “So, he's leaving the life he's come to know, oh.”

Much more apropos to Trump is “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” by the Charlie Daniels Band.

The devil went down to Georgia, he was lookin' for a soul to steal

He was in a bind 'cause he was way behind

And he was willin' to make a deal

Trump better not fiddle with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis:

And after Trump and the other 18 defendants are booked, fingerprinted and have their mug shots taken at the Fulton County Jail, we can look forward to their arraignments next month. And so we have Brook Benton’s 1970 recording of “A Rainy Night In Georgia,” or as some have recently retitled it “Arraigny Night in Georgia.”

And finally if things really go badly for Trump and he ends up going to prison in Georgia, there’s this song by country singer Kane Brown, who was raised in rural northwest Georgia: “Bury Me In Georgia.”
