The natural history exhibits in the Ohio History Center in Columbus include extinct and endangered animals.
According to the Museum:
“Extinction is a natural process that has occurred throughout the history of life on earth. The significant difference in today’s world is the rate of extinction. Between 1600 and 1850 scientists documented only five animal extinctions—or one animal every 30 years. Since 1850 the rate of global extinction has escalated to at least one animal every 2.15 years.”
The classic case of extinction which most people are aware of is the Passenger Pigeon, once the most abundant bird in the world. According to the Museum:
“Believed by many to be inexhaustible in numbers, passenger pigeons were netted, clubbed, and even killed by cutting down roost and nest trees at night. Live captive birds, or ‘stool pigeons,’ were tied to stools or perches to decoy wild pigeons into easy shooting range. Passenger pigeons wen from unbelievable abundance to extinction in less than 100 years.”
