Tomorrow, if all goes well, the Vikram lunar module of the Chandrayaan-3 mission from India will land on the moon, near the lunar south pole, close to the Manzinus crater. Launched on July 14, the lunar module is in a low orbit around the moon ready for its final trip to the surface of the moon. There is nervousness all around because the Russian Luna-25 spacecraft which was supposed to land yesterday crash-landed after a botched engine firing to lower its orbit. In 2019, India’s Chandrayaan-2 mission ended in a failure due to a hard landing.

Today is also the birthday of French composer Claude Debussy, born OTD in 1862. So, let’s take a melancholic look at the moon through the eyes of NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter set to Debussy's best-known composition, Clair de Lune.

Clair de Lune (moonlight in French) was published in 1905 as the third of four movements in the composer's Suite Bergamasque. The quiet, contemplative, and melancholic Clair de Lune would be perfect as one looks down from a spaceship around the moon.

The visualization takes the viewer through a lunar day, showing sunrises and then sunsets over prominent features on the Moon. The Chandrayaan-3 lander and its rover will explore the lunar surface for one lunar day before they go silent during the long lunar night. The visualization was created to accompany a performance of Clair de Lune by the National Symphony Orchestra Pops, led by conductor Emil de Cou, at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, on June 1 and 2, 2018, as part of a celebration of NASA's 60th anniversary.

Now let’s shoot for the moon and solve today’s puzzle which was composed by Indian chess composer Mukkur Parthasarathy in 1969, the year humans landed on the moon.
