When K2 came home from work on Tuesday afternoon, he said he had a headache and went to take a nap. Given he’d been up very late the night before, it seemed logical. But when he woke up he was coughing and achy and… tell me if you’ve seen this show before. We immediately went into isolation mode, with everyone masking in any room but their own, and I moved into K1’s room so Mr. Brillig and I had space Just In Case.
I tested negative on Friday morning, just as K2 was rounding the corner and feeling a lot better. And then… my throat started feeling thick, and my temperature started going up. I waited until Saturday morning to test, but the result was clearly a foregone conclusion.
Here in Massachusetts, Governor Baker announced a stay-at-home advisory to begin at noon on March 24 2020. Twelve hundred forty two days later, my luck ran out. And this morning, so did Mr. Brillig’s. We’ll be spending our 31st anniversary tomorrow recovering from this stupid virus.
Simba has been the goodest boy, keeping me company while I rest. That’s him laying on my leg!
We’ve been very lucky, actually, the three of us. K2’s case was very mild; he’s feeling almost back to normal although he hasn’t had a negative antigen test yet. Thanks to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts making it easily available at no cost via a simple telehealth call, Mr. Brillig and I were able to obtain paxlovid within three hours of our positive tests and I am sure that’s helping. I had congestion, a 101F fever and general aches for two days, and we expect Mr. Brillig to follow the same pattern. With luck, we’ll avoid the spectre of long covid.
Honestly, my biggest issue has been the concurrent flareup of my sciatica, which reared its annoying head on our Escape From Chicago 1000+ mile drive back from Netroots Nation. It’s making both sitting and laying down comfortably almost impossible for any length of time. I had made an appointment with my orthopedist for… today, and clearly that was rescheduled for next week. I’ve heard anecdotally that inflammation due to covid can exascerbate many other chronic symptoms, aches and pains, and am hoping that as I begin to feel better virally, I will muscle/nerve-wise, too.
Way back in July, K2 watched me packing masks for our flight to Chicago and confidently told me that “No one talks about covid anymore, it’s done. No one gets it”. Clearly the Universe took that challenge, laid low a month, then struck hard at K2’s last few weeks of summer vacation. As I posted our family’s experience on social media, I was struck by how many people commented they too either had it now or had recently gotten over it. And just today, another friend said they ‘decided to test because they saw a kit in their house’ and were surprised to test positive. ‘I’m so done with this!’ Well, it’s not done with us. And I wonder what will happen as summer ends and we return to more indoor activities, our young adults head back to universities and our youth return to their schools.
I’ll be obtaining the new booster when it comes out early this fall, and I hope you will too. I have a fresh supply of my favorite KF-94 masks at the ready. While I’ve had a relatively easy go of it, I would prefer NOT to do this again. I know of folks who’ve had it three, four, even five times, and I see no need to tempt Fate.
How about you? I hope you’re healthy and happy in your neck of the woods, because that means you can enjoy tonight’s Tops!
