The Carillon Historical Park in Dayton, Ohio is a 65-acre complex filled with dozens of museum buildings which showcase the region’s industrial innovations, transportation achievements, and contributions to world progress. Included in the displays are some transportation-related artifacts.
One Millionth Huffman Bicycle
According to the display:
“On May 13, 1947, the Huffman Manufacturing Company produced its one millionth bicycle with a chrome frame plated with 14-karat gold. The company grew out of Dayton’s Davis Sewing Machine Company, which started manufacturing bicycles in 1892. Now known as the Huffy Corporation, the company became the largest manufacturer of bicycles in the world.”
C.R. Patterson Buggy
C.R. Patterson & Sons began making buggies in 1893 and had a catalog of 28 carriage models. By 1915, they were producing automobiles. This was the only manufacturer in the United States owned and operated by African Americans.
H. K. Porter Locomotive
This narrow gauge, saddle tank steam locomotive was built in 1898 by the H.K. Porter Company, the nation’s largest and most well known manufacturer of light industrial locomotives used around the world for mining, logging, and steel production.
1912 Cadillac Touring
The Cadillac Automobile Company was organized in 1902 and used the slogan “Craftsmanship a Creed, Accuracy a Law.” The company was acquired by General Motors in 1909.
This car is equipped with an L-head, in-line four cylinder, 40 horsepower engine. The original price was $1,800.
Dayton Motorcycle
1919 Ford Model T Depot Hack
Bootleggers devised many ingenious ways to smuggle illegal liquor. Hiding liquor in automobiles was one way to smuggle liquor. Shown below is a 1919 Ford Model T Depot Hack outfitted as a bootlegger’s truck.
