Choose Shoes
The other day I came across a survey reporting that the average American man owns 12 pairs of shoes, while the average American woman owns a whopping 27 pairs. That would make the national average about 19 pairs per person. Google lists many surveys, but these numbers seem to be generally similar.
I guess I’m unusual in that I only have one pair, which I wear every day. Due to an ankle problem I have to have low-cut shoes, and New Balance works well. At the farm I got them wet often and they didn’t last, but here at the condo they still look brand new with almost no wear after six years.
What I want is a quality shoe:
About 20 years ago Mrs. side pocket bought a pair of shoes in New Mexico (Taos). From that time on it has been a shoe revelation for me. Women stop her constantly and admire them and ask where she got them.
Repaired several times by a master cobbler.
Now that I’m aware, I have fun watching these reactions. When we were visiting Ferndale, Ca. last year we saw some shoes in a storefront, a small store that sold Fair Trade items. I encouraged her to go in, and when she tried on one pair i said “Get them”. It turned out they were hand made by a woman’s co-op in Panama. The reaction of women has been similar to that with the New Mexico shoes.
Continuing on the shoe theme, we recently read a book by an author new to us, called “Someone Else’s Shoes”, by Jojo Moyes. What a discovery, and what a great book, one which keeps one reading till after midnight. We have just ordered more of her books from our library. I don’t want to give any plot away, except for……..
