Dawn Chorus: open thread Summer Birds [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2023-08-20

No host today so consider this week’s Dawn Chorus an open thread for your birdy observations of the week.

I’ll kick this off with a few birdies I only see in summer in the Pacific Northwest islands. Within the next few months all will depart for their winter homes, if they haven’t already.

Barn swallows are gathering on lines, a sure sign they’re getting ready to migrate

House wren

Savannah sparrow

American Goldfinch dad and fledglings. This was a few weeks ago; fledglings have now moved past the begging stage

Osprey

Rough winged swallow. The pairs who nest in the clay bank near this bird have all fledged their young. Haven’t seen any Roughwings for a week or so

Rufous hummer. Last of the females & youngsters left a week or so ago

Wilson’s warbler

Heermann’s gulls will stick around into October

Cedar waxwing

Yellow rumped warbler

Black headed grosbeak. Females are still calling to their youngsters, all continue to visit feeders and birdbaths

Bandtail pigeon

Purple martins are in various stage of fledging young

What’s up in your birdy world this week?
