No human designed system is perfect, but you would think one that is based on “protecting our own against violent offenders” would not keep fucking up this way. What ever happened to “Back the Blue”? Instead, the justice systems motto appears to be “Coddle The White Insurrectionist.”
Florida man on house arrest disappears days before sentencing for spraying Capitol police with pepper gel on Jan. 6
Let that sink in for a bit. A man who assaulted cops was on house arrest instead of sitting in jail and waiting to be sentenced. And it’s the dirty fucking hippie left that is anti-cop?
Christopher Worrell, 51, was convicted in May of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers using a dangerous weapon, obstruction of an official proceeding of Congress, and physical violence in the Capitol grounds or buildings, along with other offenses. According to prosecutors, Worrell unloaded a canister of “pepper gel” on a line of police officers trying to hold back the crowd of Donald Trump supporters who were angry over Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 presidential election and wanted to keep Trump in power. He later bragged that he had “deployed a whole can” and was “f—— handing it to them,” the Justice Department says.
Huh Huh, Cool! Damn Marxist Gestapo Election Stealers got what was comin’!
He was convicted after a five-day bench trial before Senior U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth. In announcing the verdict, Lamberth called Worrell’s defense — that he had been pepper spraying other violent rioters, not police officers — “preposterous” and that Worrell’s testimony at trial presented an “unbelievable” and “false narrative” that was “undermined by the contradictions and post-January 6 false statements identified by the government during Mr. Worrell’s cross-examination and the government’s rebuttal case.” Lamberth set sentencing for Aug. 18. However, docket entries show that the hearing was canceled just days before — and that Worrell is apparently nowhere to be found. “The Sentencing currently scheduled for 8/18/2023 at 2:30pm is hereby VACATED and will be rescheduled by the Court at a later date,” a docket order signed by Lamberth on Aug. 15 said.
So the judge didn’t even believe this mofo. But what does Judge Lamberth do? He lets the lying violent offender stay at home until sentencing.
In Lamberth’s defense is that Worrell stated he was being treated for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. And Worrell stated he needed to receive medical treatment outside of jail. Seems like a reasonable request.
But just how is Worrell to obtain treatment for his disease if he is on the run now? Does he have a lot of cash on hand to pay for treatment? It’s not like you can use any medical insurance while being a fugitive. The cynic within me says that Worrell may not be as sick now. In fact, he seems to have enough energy to go on the run.
Now, you may be thinking, “Given how lenient some of the judges have been, wouldn’t Worrell have better chances with sentencing?” I mean this isn’t Judge Chutkan. Lamberth is a Reagan appointee, and he would probably split the difference or go to the low end of any sentencing request from the government. And Worrell’s lawyers really pulled a “Trump legal maneuver” and asked for 12-18 months only. And the article states that Lamberth was showing some sympathy toward Worrell (he cited two prison officials for contempt for not keeping adequate medical records on Worrell when he was originally jailed and before house arrest).
So “I’m sick, so please don’t lock me up for years on end!” might have worked with Judge Lamberth.
But the big bad government had other things in mind. The prosecution was asking for 14 years in prison for Worrell, and according to this article, the sentencing recommendation was on the low end of this type of conviction. The high end is 17.5 years.
By the way, Worrell also shoved two cops defending a staircase during the insurrection. The cops he shoved were part of a line that blocked entry into the Capitol Building, and according to the article, the police line collapsed because of Worrell’s action. And Worrell had traveled up to D.C. with one of the local chapters of the Proud Boys.
All of this brings up multiple questions:
