"EVERYONE WELCOME" even us crazy liberals??? [1]

I am writing about my morning in a southern rural community. I eventually came across the sign “Everyone Welcome”. I will end the article musing on this.

I had to get up early for some routine blood work. It required overnight fasting and NO coffee. Yikes! So my wife and I planned to go out for breakfast after the blood work and do a few errands. Everything is at least a half-hour away so we always try to do multiple errands on each trip.

We went to the downtown diner. The counter was at least 100 feet long and had cast iron stools along it. Floor was small six sided black and white tiles. Really worn. Building seems at least 120 years old. I’m pretty sure this was original equipment from as far back as the 50s. Not the 1850s in case you’re wondering.

So I sat there eating two sunny-side eggs, a delicious biscuit, southern style, and country fried steak for breakfast. And lots of coffee. I think I’m finally awake. My wife and I talked about what this place might have looked and sounded like in the 50s and who might have been welcomed. Virginia was the heart of the confederacy and segregation well into the 1970s.

I knew a person who grew up in this town and described what it was like back then. I can picture a very different time, as if we were sitting at this counter back then. I don’t even want to guess at the conversations I might have heard back then. The conversations we heard today were about life. No politics. People just getting along.

Then we saw the sign, “EVERYONE WELCOME”, while getting non-ethanol gas. (In case you are wondering, why non-ethanol, it’s what the large mowers require, to prevent damage in winters.) I’ll get to “everyone” at the end, just want to describe the rest of the morning.

The next thing we saw were local political signs for the county sheriffs race this fall. (BTW, we saw no tfg pollution on main roads) There are two main candidates. Our preferred candidate is running an independent campaign as they believe there should be no politics in law enforcement and wants to reform the sheriffs department. And the incumbent. If you want to guess the worst possible person to be in charge of law enforcement, well you’re right. Last election it was public knowledge they were abusing the office and Sheriff deputies were reveling an office environment of verbal abuse and worse. It was public knowledge. The person got reelected. They have been on national media proudly proclaiming their political stances, 2nd amendment stuff and all.. They now have been federally indicted for selling fake gun licenses for 10k a pop to collect campaign funds. You guess the party. All of this is in the media. And they are running again. Some have no shame. Wonder who taught them this?

Next we drove into a community next to ours to see how it was maintained. Our community is a bit of a mess so we’re trying to fix it up. We saw a fence, way back in the community, littered with the foul alt-right flags. No point to quote any of it. Just foul.

Finally, back to “EVERYONE WELCOME” I sat there when I saw it for about two minutes. I was just filling up on gas, but I was distracted. My neighbor refers to us liberals as “crazy ass lib-tards”. (By the way were friends of sorts, no political talk rules for us, might get bloody.) So does this mean we “crazy ass libtards” are welcome. Why is this gas stop now making this statement? Seems a bit late for civil rights stuff. It is 2023. Or isn’t it too late? Is it a new all inclusive statement? Could they have just said “Ya All are welcome”.

Then I thought about who is “EVERYONE”??? Does it really include everyone. Could a Gay Pride caravan gas up? I’m guessing people of the non-white skin color might be welcomed. Not sure? How bout a car plastered with the wrong stuff, the “lib-tards”. Are they welcomed? A caravan of gas guzzling pickups with the alt-right flags? Pretty sure they are included. What happens if they have both the Gay pride and Alt-right. Too scary to go there. Got white skin? Is that the EVERYONE?

I’’m giving them the benefit of doubt and thinking they did mean EVERYONE. They are trying.

I personally like “Ya all are welcome”. Good ole southern hospitality that really means EVERYONE, but with no strings attached. Welcome to 2023.
