PWB Peeps Open Thread: Fauna of Japan [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

The Japanese archipelago stretches across several climatic zones, from subtropical to subarctic. It shares species with the analogous zones on the mainland, and also has many indigenous species found nowhere else, such as the Iriomote cat.

The Japanese macaque in the title photo is the world’s most northerly monkey species, and enjoys hot tubbing in the snow.

The sika deer was found through most of east Asia, and introduced elsewhere, but is now found mostly in Japan, where it is overabundant.

Japan’s national bird is the green pheasant.

Many islands have their own indigenous bird species, and Japan is a stop on the migratory routes of many birds in spring and fall.

There are many salamander species, and lizards endemic to Japan, and reptiles such as the Okinawa black-breasted leaf turtle.

PWBPeeps is a group that posts a daily diary and nightly open thread for animal lovers. We share photos, seek & give advice about pet health and behavior issues, support each other in times of sadness and stress, celebrate together when times are good, and on most days have an inordinate amount of fun.

You are welcome to join us!
