A good Sunday morning to you, Folks. This morning’s diary features the music of Milwaukee’s own homegrown group, the Violent Femmes. But first,
Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum. Join us, please.
The Violent Femmes were founded in 1981 by bassist Brian Ritchie, drummer Victor DeLorenzo and guitarist and lead vocalist Gordon Gano. They got their start with gigs in coffee houses and street corners in the Milwaukee area. Their big break came when they were busking on the corner in front of Milwaukee’s Oriental Theater where the band The Pretenders was playing that night. The Pretenders’ James Honeyman-Scott heard them playing and invited them in to meet the rest of his band. Chrissie Hynde invited them to play an acoustic set that night after their opening act.
If you’ve never heard them give them a quick try. They have a fun, folk/punk sound.
This is, as always, an open thread.
