Blatantly Racist Acts by DeSantis in Florida — The Week in Editorial Cartoons [1]

Will playing “dog-whistle politics” save his faltering 2024 Campaign, or is it over for Ron DeSantis?
It was a page taken right out of Richard Nixon’s “Southern Strategy” and Ronald Reagan’s “Dog Whistle Politics” playbooks from their political campaigns in the 1960s through the 1980s.
Accusing her of being soft on crime, Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) dismissed State Attorney Monique Worrell this past Wednesday. She was first elected to her office in 2020 by the voters of Orange and Osceola counties in the Orlando area to Florida's Ninth Judicial Circuit.
One day later — as an example of his political vindictiveness — DeSantis also fired Worrell’s Chief of Staff Keisha Mulfort while she was on maternity leave. It is insensitivity, callousness, and cruelty of the highest order.
Only the second African-American to hold the position — and currently the only Black woman in the State of Florida serving as State Attorney — Worrell was replaced for dubious reasons. Democratic party officials in Florida roundly criticized her dismissal and characterized this action as a case of political overreach. Others described it as an “affront to democracy” and called DeSantis a “bully” and a “coward” interested only in weaponizing the state government to resuscitate his 2024 Presidential Campaign, one which has, so far, not been a great political success.

Similar brazen political acts last year earned lots of praise for DeSantis from conservative media outlets. DeSantis touted his tough-on-crime, law-and-order approach in political speeches leading up to his announcement to seek higher political office. It hasn’t done anything for his lagging campaign.

Is this action legal in the State of Florida? Apparently so.
The Florida constitution allows a governor to remove an elected official for “malfeasance, misfeasance, neglect of duty, habitual drunkenness, incompetence, or permanent inability to perform official duties.” No previous Florida executive has interpreted that power as broadly as DeSantis. The state Senate can reinstate Worrell, but the chamber is controlled by Republicans closely aligned with DeSantis and have rarely stood in his way.
As if his first act wasn't vengeful enough, Worrell’s Chief of Staff was let go this past Thursday by Ron DeSantis.
Former State Attorney Worrell’s chief of staff fired while on maternity leave Keisha Mulfort says armed deputies showed up at her door ORLANDO, Fla. – One day after Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended Ninth Judicial Circuit State Attorney Monique Worrell, new leadership fired an employee who was out on maternity leave. Keisha Mulfort was Worrell’s Chief of Staff. She worked until the day she gave birth. Two days after giving birth she was hospitalized and has since been out on the Family Medical Leave Act, or FMLA. Mulfort says Thursday she was blindsided. She was nursing her baby when there was a knock at her door. “It’s unacceptable. I am on FMLA and y’all are coming here like I’m a criminal,” Mulfort said on cell phone video.

Worrell’s replacement is 37-year-old African-American lawyer Andrew Bain, who is also a member of the conservative Federalist Society. A former prosecutor and judge for Orange County, and an offensive lineman for the University of Miami Hurricanes football team while in college, Bain "received low marks in a judicial qualifications poll by the Central Florida Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, ranking last among Orange County criminal judges."
As everyone knows, members of the Federalist Society now serving as SCOTUS justices have wreaked untold damage on this country. In a laughable claim — one that ignores his questionable political affiliations — Bain insisted that his life experiences and background as a sharecropper’s grandson made him uniquely qualified to serve in this position.

When shall we three meet again?
In thunder, lightning, or in rain?
When the hurlyburly’s done,
When the battle’s lost and won.
Fair is foul, and foul is fair;
Hover through the fog and filthy air.
