Letting Go of Deeply Held Belief [1]

There is a peculiar and often bizzaro-world-feeling surrounding us these days. Reality itself often seems up for grabs anymore when politicians like the former guy constantly assault us with a tornado of grade A, pure BS. So how can we deal with these... turdnadoes, if you will? I don't know, but let's start by looking at where the source might lie for a moment.

I see a pretty direct link between the Mango Madmans latest defense of his failed coup and the contemporary notion that so-called "deeply held beliefs" should reign supreme above all laws and absolve anyone of their responsibility for their own choices and actions. In his recent Newsmax interview, Cheeto Mussolini, emphatically states that he truly believes he won the election and therefore his plot to topple the American government is justified. And by extension this would justify the violent behavior of the Cult 45 members during the Republican attack on Washington, on January 6th. The first time I heard the phrase "deeply held beliefs" was during the W Bush administration, so immediate red flag alert. It's been used to promote giving tax revenue to "Faith Based" groups and to deny same golden cash cow promotions to pro-choice affiliated groups, much to the delight of the radical right. We then see the rise of the insane "stand your ground laws" that say if you just believe someone is a threat you can legally end their life, no questions asked. Just believe deeply and pull that trigger, baby! Bang! It's madness.

It's the same "deeply held beliefs" dumpster fire of a philosophy, that the ever valiant Bakers of the True Kingdom of God use to deny equality to same sex couples. These Sheet Cake Redeemers refuse to share their sweet, sweet frosting with anyone but true believers because, you know, deeply held beliefs. No, there will be no butter cream bliss, no red velvet ecstasy, nor black forest chocolate nirvana for us non-believers. The Pastry Chefs of the Scripture, like their God, serve Heavenly delights only to those who submit to their ways of thinking.

Perhaps cake isn’t your thing but you’d like to keep women oppressed and deny them control over their bodies. Well just dust off that black book you never really read, the one with the “t” shaped symbol on the front; that’s for trump now, right? It used to mean something different. Anyway, dust it off and tell those jet setting, luxury RV driving clowns in black robes about your deeply held beliefs and they will hook you up, my good man. Just believe and Poof! There goes Roe v. Wade. But remember to bring lots of cash, those Supremes have expensive taste.

So... let’s see, maybe deeply holding our beliefs ain’t the only way to go and Belief Supremacists shouldn't have the right to repress our ways of living. Maybe there’s a way to hold our beliefs loosely no matter how deeply we practice our religions. Maybe we can accept that we are different and be proud of our courage to accept diverse world views without feeling the necessity to win, win, win at all costs, by knowing our way isn't the only right way to live.

I don't know.

I certainly don't have a deeply held belief that puts my ways, my being, above others and I can't see why I should be treated unequally because of others beliefs. And most of all we cannot allow consensus reality and the American experiment to be held captive to one man's deeply held belief. One tiny handed, petty, scared, vindictive man's deeply held belief is no excuse to deny reality. Dude's going to jail. So hold aloft your thickly frosted cupcakes my friends and give praise to those who don't hold their beliefs so deeply.
