Happy Birthday to Sir Roger Penrose (born Aug 8, 1931), British mathematician, mathematical physicist, and philosopher of science. He is regarded as one of the greatest living physicists, mathematicians and scientists.
He was awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics "for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity".
x Ten years after Einstein’s death, physics laureate Roger Penrose demonstrated that black holes can form and described their properties. Penrose’s ground-breaking article is still regarded as the most important contribution to the general theory of relativity since Einstein. pic.twitter.com/9oblEk51QO — The Nobel Prize (@NobelPrize) August 8, 2023
Besides his seminal work on Black Holes, Penrose ventured into bridging the gap between physics and consciousness. He argued against the viewpoint that the rational processes of the mind are completely algorithmic and can thus be duplicated by a sufficiently complex computer. Penrose and Hameroff went to develop the controversial theory of quantum biology, which argues that consciousness is the result of quantum gravity effects in microtubules.
He also proposed the Conformal cyclic cosmology (CCC) model, which challenges the accepted theory that the Universe started with the Big Bang and nothing can said about what happened before. According to CCC, the universe cycles from one aeon to the next, each time starting out infinitely small and ultra-smooth before expanding and generating clumps of matter. That matter eventually gets sucked up by supermassive black holes, which eventually dissipate via Hawking radiation. This process restores uniformity and sets the stage for the next Big Bang. He co-authored a paper providing some evidence of signals from Blacks holes that must have existed prior to the Big Bang. physicsworld.com/…
It is a neat concept, attractive in its simplicity and removes the singularity around the Big Bang. But to many, it sounds more like (eastern) religion/philosophy than physics, since the theory and the evidence are weak.
Now let’s focus our power of physics, logic and the mind to solve today’s puzzle, composed by Kenneth Samuel Howard in 1931, the year Roger Penrose was born.
P.S.
The chess puzzle is published on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
It is customary for advanced players to wait till midnight ET before posting the full solution. Before then, they provide some stats about the solution (e.g., the minimum number of distinct checkmate moves), help guide others, and sometimes post hints. But there are no hard-and-fast rules; feel free to post comments as you please.
