An Abbreviated Good News Roundup for Bluesday, August 8th [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2023-08-08

I took a nearly 100% vacation from the news the last two weeks (I received a couple of phone calls from friends wanting to talk about the newest indictments). In fact, I still haven’t managed to read any news since I started putting this roundup together. Guess what? — The world didn’t end while I was disconnected. The Jackass from Jamaica* is still heading to jail unless his cholesterol count takes him out first. The republican party are still poster children for betrayal of oaths. Joe Biden is still rocking his Dark Brandon persona.

There’s a lesson there. Politics doesn’t have a fast forward button. No matter how much we’d like this all to be over, it will continue to mosey along at the glacial pace of change that’s been the rule for the last several millennia.

The old idiom, “What goes around, comes around” comes to mind. We do have choices to make, while we wait for the Great Comeuppance. We can sit back and calmly (or frenetically as the case may be) wish for the come-aroundering to hurry the hell up. Or, we can do our part to nudge it along.

Silence is complicity. So, make your voice heard. Don’t put yourself into physical danger, but don’t surrender to bigotry and bile either.

The republican party is just as tiresome today as they were last month. They still make tedious people look bright and attractive. Their message is just as repetitive and nonsensical as it’s been for the last half century. Although, to be fair, it has become more openly bigoted. tfg’s sickophants are clearly terrified. Their braying is more strident and unhinged. Their official positions still reflect no shred of human decency, no fragment of compassion, and not a tiny bit of dignity.

Anyhow, while I was away from the news, I also realized that my writing has become stale and formulaic: rant a little, throw some shade, do some punning, and voila — a roundup. I need to find a way to reinvent my style yet again. Otherwise, I’m just going through the motions and repeating myself. I hate when I get stuck in a loop.

For example, I don’t know how to address the fact that we had an obvious gold-digger squatting in the White House without coming off as a sexist ass. I haven’t figured out how to cogently articulate the culpability of business owners greed accounting for a large part of our inflation problems.

I don’t intend to go away or give up the fight. But, I think I need to step back for a month or two to recharge the batteries and see if I can find a path to becoming a better writer. Please wish me luck.

PS: If there’s interest I can continue to put out collections of memes, perhaps as GNR presents On The Lighter Side (with an Edge) on a regular basis. Let me know in the comments. I also have a few unpublished snark pieces (think original Evening Shade diaries) that I’d like to polish up and publish.

We have the power. We have the ability. We can and we will do this.

Slava Ukraini!

Remember the Children

Screw you, Samuel Alito (and your little putz Clarence Thomas, too)!

The writer’s strike has really bothered me. I miss Colbert, Myers, and Oliver terribly. Still this parody of Truckin’ helped take away some of the sting.

Since I am unwilling to read any news at the moment, the news section will consist of:

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS

Please feel free to add some news of your own in the comments. My boycott is a personal one, and undoubtedly temporary.

The Hunting Pressley Report

Musings from the desk of Pressley T. NotEver

Pressley surrounded by her diverse security detail

Dateline: (Fresh from hanging out with the goats next door to Chez NNNE). In today’s edition, Pressley speaks out on press(ley)ing issues faced by Doggie Nation. The microphone is all yours, Pressley.

I am a calm dog. I don’t bark much. I’m not one to flip out at fireworks of thunder storms. The thing that puts my tail in a knot is when some rabid know-nothing political hack starts talking through their ass about things outside their competence. I’ve sniffed a lot of ass over the years, and I can guarantee you that Comer, Jordan and the rest of that crowd reek to badly for any of us canines to voluntarily be in the same zip-code. Our noses are 30,000 times more sensitive than yours, making the stench surrounding them quite literally painful. Can’t you humans get together and send them someplace dogs can’t go? If you sent them to the moon you’d even know what we’re howling about (and so would we).

I vote for cucumbers for everyone

Goodnight Chet.

On the Lighter Side (with an Edge)

I snuck some news in after all, disguised as memes. My bad.

Closing Notes

We’ll close out with a Bobby Weir song from his album Ace, performed by the Dead starting in 1974. The song was inspired by Cassidy Law, the daughter of one of the band’s crew members. It also alludes to Neal Cassady, a famous beat poet, and one of their fellow travelers during the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Tests.
