Armored all-terrain fighting vehicles, commonly known as tanks, were introduced as a part of the era of mechanized warfare which began in World War I. Tanks soon became the mainstay of ground armies. The Lewis Army Museum on Fort Lewis near Tacoma, Washington, includes an extensive outdoor display of tanks. Shown below are some of the light tanks at the Lewis Army Museum.
Light tanks are designed for rapid movement. They are smaller in size, have thinner armor, and a less powerful main gun.
M-24 Chaffee Light Tank
This World War II era tank has a top speed of 35 mph on road and 25 mph off-road.
M-3A1 Stuart Light Tank
This tank entered service in 1941 as a light tank and reconnaissance vehicle. While it saw combat in North Africa, it didn’t have the firepower and range of the German tanks. In the Pacific, the Stuart was effective against the lighter Japanese tanks. Over 12,000 were produced. In 1944, it was replaced by the Chaffee light tank.
M-551 Sheridan Light Tank
This tank was in service from 1967 until 1997. It could be transported by air. It has a top speed of 43 mph and a range of 348 miles.
