It's National Lighthouse Day. What are your favorites? [1]

Today, August 7, is celebrated as National Lighthouse Day. On this day in 1789, Congress approved an Act for the establishment and support of lighthouse, beacons, buoys and public piers. In celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the signing of the Act, Congress passed a resolution which designated August 7, 1989 as National Lighthouse Day. Now, National Lighthouse Day is celebrated annually by lighthouse organizations nationwide, even though Congress has yet to designate August 7 as the date our country officially recognizes in perpetuity the importance of America’s lighthouse heritage. See www.lighthousefoundation.org/… for more info.

Lighthouses have a special place in our hearts, even for us landlubbers who live hundreds of miles from the coast. Each one is so unique in architecture and so rich in history. They have played memorable roles in so many tales and stories of yore and a visit to a lighthouse leaves a lasting impression in one’s consciousness.

The editor of Lighthouse Digest (a Mainer) once said: “Lighthouses are to America what castles are to Europe.”

There are more than 1,000 lighthouses in the U.S., over 21,000 worldwide.

We will post a few images and tweets (sigh!) of my favorites from around the world that are unique in architecture and history (I have visited but a few from the list). We will leave it to our readers to post info and/or images of their favorite ones.

There are many lighthouses images posted on twitter. Search there or Google lighthouse or check out the Lighthouse Directory if you want to indulge yourself.

The Cosmic Lighthouses, guiding our understanding of the Universe.

x Happy #NationalLighthouseDay!

"Cosmic" lighthouses, known as pulsars, are rapidly spinning neutron stars that emit X-ray photons in beams that sweep the sky. From far away they appear to pulse! Please share your memories, pictures, thoughts and experiences about lighthouses. Some visited, some seen, some read about, some from literature and some from your imagination.
