Does Carl Sagan hold the key to why Trumpists WILL NOT give up their slavish devotion to him? [1]

Good day everyone!
As one of the “lucky few” who has been keeping tabs on the oft-indicted “Mango Mussolini” since his less-than-stellar real estate career in the NYC area in the 70’s and 80's, I’m constantly amazed by the sheer devotion of his followers.
I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Jersey Guy. I’ve seen many of his properties (DON’T ask me about the horror show that was Trump’s Taj Mahal in Atlantic City...I still shudder to remember...), lived near some others (the apartments he and his father Fred owned in East Orange, NJ), and had season tickets to the USFL New Jersey Generals (more fool me...) among other cheap thrills. I’ve watched his incredibly self-centered antics in the NY press (believe me, they LOVED it).
Considering all of the above, I NEVER thought that he would be someone people would follow, much less devote their lives to. But here we are. Mark Burnett (The Apprentice Executive Producer) has a LOT to answer for...but I digress…
As the title suggests, I believe that I have run across a quote from the famed astronomer, astrophysicist and author Carl Sagan that seems to apply to our current situation. Presented for your consideration:
“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”
