This is an Open Thread / Coffee Hour and all topics of conversation are welcome. And as a suggested topic lets talk about empathy and artificial intelligence. Disclosure: The content above the fold was generated by myself, a human, and the fictional story beyond the fold was generated by Chat GPT-3.5.
Last week I attended a meet and greet on August 2, 2023 with my California state senior, Bill Dodd and my congressman, John Garamendi.
What I planned to do was ask them what they were doing to regulate artificial intelligence. And I also wanted to explore if their campaign staff was interested in training in reflective listening. A bit like yin and yang empathy and AI are linked in my mind. It is my belief that empathy should be hardwired into AI.

This hardwired approach is what artificial intelligence alignment is all about. It is building into AI values that align with human values. It is building AI systems that are not going to kill us or harm us.
I had a talk with Senator Bill Dodd about the alignment issue and was impressed that he was on top of the issue and was taking the lead in California on crafting legislation for regulating AI. I was also impressed that he was quite up to speed with the technical jargon.
Dodd referred me to his legislative work in progress called the ‘California AI-ware Act’. He assured me that he is leading the effort and receptive to input from alignment advocates like myself.
SB 313 boosts consumer privacy and protection amid emergence of artificial intelligence Tuesday, April 11, 2023 SACRAMENTO – Amid a current explosion of artificial intelligence technology, legislation advanced today from Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, that would increase consumer privacy and protection, aligning California law with the principles of President Joe Biden’s Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights. “Like any new industry we’ve seen, safeguards must be added as the risks emerge,” said Sen. Dodd. It’s like the auto industry. Over the years we’ve adopted speed limits, seatbelts and airbags. Now is the time for AI oversight to catch up, increasing consumer protections with the help of proactive, thoughtful policy.” From: Sen. Dodd’s ‘California AI-ware Act’ Clears Committee
After speaking to Dodd I talked to one of his campaign staff managers about reflective listening training for their canvasing staff. And I got a positive response. I plan to follow up with a proposal to offer them a Zoom class on reflective listening. For a detailed discussion of GOTV and canvasing see my Daily Kos article: Building a Culture of Empathy #02 | Empathy Circles and GOTV.
