Quick Sunday Report on Hope Springs GOTV in Ohio [1]

578,961 Ohioans have voted early . We have no idea, yet, what to expect on Election Day. What we know is that we have to complete our GOTV plan, as it gives us the best chance for victory. We’ve been calling volunteers to remind them of the shifts they signed up for this weekend, and i did have a couple of people ask if they were still needed. Hell, yes! Run scared, like victory requires you to give everything you’ve got. I know i do.
Today was our third day of GOTV Week here in Ohio . This is an intermediate report about today’s efforts. Numbers are not final so i do expect some change between what gets reported here and what goes into the regular diary on this weekend’s effort in Ohio. Our GOTV universe is now 43,127 households . This number does include voters who voted on Friday, Saturday or today. We hope to get a significant drop tomorrow as VAN inputs at least the Friday and Saturday voters. It includes everything: voters who have told us over the last month they opposed Issue 1, voters who have told us over the last two years they were Abortion single voters, etc. Any voter that Hope Springs from Field PAC had indications they would vote to defeat this onerous changing in the voting laws. People who have voted have been removed and we are hoping that VAN reports a big drop in this number before we cut turf for Tuesday.
Yesterday, i reported that 1,231 volunteers came out to knock on doors. We knew that they had taken out turf equal to 100,572 doors. Today we see that the number is more like 96,006 doors. This may change but that’s what is in VAN right now.
Today, we had 562 volunteers come out to knock on doors on a Sunday. Today’s canvass was a little different. We were really pushing the last opportunity to vote early and we did have voters who took advantage of that.
They took out turf for 46,308 doors. Most people do finish walking their turf but we are encouraging volunteers who are local to the turf they are walking to take voters to the Early Voting centers if they find someone(s) who wants to go and vote today and needs a ride. And anyone who does this is very unlikely to complete their walk list! Still a vote in hand is better. Others, who find a voter who needs a ride, will call Vote Drivers to take them.
43 of today’s volunteers came to Ohio from Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois, North Carolina and Georgia. These aren’t “super volunteers,” to use the Obama campaign nomenclature. These are our stud volunteers, mostly women who double as organizers in their states. Their help is greatly appreciated since they can cut turf, motivate others, and knock on a lot of doors. 14 volunteers, especially from Georgia and North Carolina, spoke at Black Churches this morning to urge people to vote today. Several spoke to multiple churches. Our Georgian organizers were especially in demand.
County boards of election were open today until 5 p.m. Anyone who was in line by 5 was supposed to be able to cast their ballot. We did have one driver at each staging location ready to drive anyone to the Early Voting centers if needed. This will be repeated on Tuesday.
Tomorrow we have 253 volunteers signed up for our last GOTV lit drop. Monday night's lit drop occurs not only to remind voters to go vote Tuesday, but also to mark houses where no one has picked up the lit. During the day on Monday, organizers will cut drivable turf for Monday night and Tuesday's 3 rounds of Running Down the Vote. Most of our out-of-state volunteers will be staying as well (they are not included in the 253 number).
On Tuesday, volunteers will be driving from house to house of known opponents to Issue 1, knocking on doors and asking if they have voted yet. We will endeavor to knock non-voter’s doors three times, unless they have voted. Those who report they have will be struck from the list. There are two shifts on Monday, those who will run down voters from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and those who signed up for the 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. shift. We have discouraged people from signing up for both shifts, but some have. It’ll be a very long day!
We will be doing Ballot Curing until the vote is called. We have been doing test runs of this for 2 weeks and we feel really prepared for the next week!
And we continue our special outreach to New Voters (and not just new voters Hope Springs volunteers registered). We are reminding those who recently registered using a paper form or updated their registration must provide additional identification for the first time this year: either an Ohio driver’s license, ID number or the last four digits of their Social Security number.
We are asking for your help here. Our primary expenses for this grassroots-driving effort is VAN (the voter file Democrats use) and literature. Expanding our efforts — hitting more doors — means we have to pay more for VAN. We also need to provide clipboards for our volunteers, since we use the Issues Survey as a guide and we like volunteers to show voters the survey, as well as have something for voters to support Constituent Service Request forms when they fill out one.
If you are able to donate to our efforts to fight against Issue 1, identify abortion rights supporters, protect our voters, especially in minority communities, expand the electorate, please help:
