Patrick Braxton became the first black mayor of the town of Newbern, Alabama in more than 160 years. No other candidate filed to run, so Braxton won by default. How did the white minority of the town respond? By holding a secret election that only an “alternate slate” of voters knew about…. White voters, of course. Just after Braxton took office, the locks were changed on City Hall, and the coup was completed. Braxton has filed a civil lawsuit, seeking to retain a mayorship that he won fair and square but, in my honest opinion, the court case should be a criminal one. Laws were broken here, and the Constitution of the United States, as the people in Newbern, Alabama see it, was ripped to shreds in the middle of the night.
Seems that a small group of white MAGA folks learned an important lesson from Donald Trump. If at first you don’t succeed, then it’s time to pull off a coup and take what doesn’t belong to you.
