Good News Roundup for Friday, August 4, 2023: There Are More of Us Than There Are of Them [1]
['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!
I hope everyone has been celebrating the indictment! We’ll cover it here, of course, but we’re also going to cover other stuff.
“There are more of us than there are of them.” That’s one of the phrases repeated in the “Regular Scheduled Programming.”
I really believe it’s true. Our side is stronger, too. Look at all Biden has been accomplishing.
Maddow’s Monday show talked about how broke the various R state parties are broke, something we’ve covered before. She also brought up how the Rs’ front runner has been indicted more than once, and yet is way ahead of all the challengers. What do both of these things mean? The Rs are weak. The Rs are lacking in enthusiasm. This is true despite what you see on TV, where many of the people at the various rallies are the same people, going from one place to another like bizarro Grateful Dead groupies. And, oddly, the Rs are somehow hostage to tRump, despite the fact that 95% of the people who have worked with him hate him passionately.
With little money in the state GOP coffers, how are they going to support local elections? Especially when so many of them are facing lawsuits and charges for having done a lot of things that are downright illegal. Yes, they still have a lot of dark money, but that can’t always buy enthusiasm or even competence. In the meantime, team blue has been doing great in special elections.
Moreover, we have allies in all the states — see the doctors down below — and around the world. Think of the solidarity of Ukraine, the fact that Finland joined NATO and Sweden is on its way. Think of the protests in Israel. The protests — may ceiling cat bless them, it’s so hard — in Iran. Elections in Spain, and in Brazil. Yes, the fascists are fighting, but so is the resistance.
As Jessiestaf once said, the only goal of the Rs seems to be to make liberals mad. Well, we’re mad. And we’re fighting. And there are more of us than there are of them.
Come on in, dear gnusies, and see what the good guys are doing!
Regular Scheduled Programming
No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember:
💙 There are more of us than there are of them.
💛 They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED!
💔 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.
🗽 Biden as President ! 🗽
Biden, Harris and their administration have been hard at work (well, some of them have been taking some much deserved vacation). Here are the last week’s posts at the White House briefing room.
👎 Out with the Bad, In with the Good 👍
New code introduced:military justice reforms (actually bipartisan) — very important for women in the military. And near the military. White House Briefing Room, July 28
Today, President Biden will sign an Executive Order to implement historic, bipartisan military justice reforms that significantly strengthen how the military handles sexual assault cases. The Executive Order transfers key decision-making authorities from commanders to specialized, independent military prosecutors in cases of sexual assault, domestic violence, murder, and other serious offenses by amending the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). These changes, which implement reforms passed by Congress in the Fiscal Year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (FY22 NDAA), represent the most significant transformation of the military justice system since the UCMJ was established in 1950. The historic reforms announced today will better protect victims and ensure prosecutorial decisions are fully independent from the chain of the command. They follow decades of tireless efforts by survivors, advocates, and Members of Congress, to strengthen the military justice system’s response to gender-based violence and build on recommendations from the Independent Review Commission on Sexual Assault in the Military (IRC), which Secretary Austin established at President Biden’s direction as one of his earliest acts in office. These reforms are a turning point for survivors of gender-based violence in the military. They fulfill President Biden’s promise to fundamentally shift how the military justice system responds to sexual assault and related crimes, which is something President Biden has prioritized since Day One of this administration. Ending gender-based violence wherever it occurs has been a top priority for the President throughout his career—as a Senator, and as Vice President. As Commander in Chief, he’s made clear that our one truly sacred obligation as a nation is to prepare and equip those we send into harm’s way, and to care for them and their families both while they are deployed and when they return home. The reforms implemented through today’s Executive Order do just that, promoting dignity and respect for those who serve by better protecting our servicemembers and making the military safer and more just.
Much more specific stuff at the link. Obviously no problem with fair use, as it’s a press release, but it’s long.
Why did this finally happen? Because Vanessa Guillén was murdered (Wikipedia), and then grass-roots work led to the overturning of the code that covered up crimes by the military.
Judges! Good judges!
A few days ago. More coming. 😄
We also have to celebrate how Wisconsin’s new Supreme Court Justice, Janet Protasiewicz, was sworn in on Tuesday afternoon.
💣 Republicans: Party of Crimes and Chaos 💣
Gosh, who got indicted this week? the ex president. Again. Everyone else is reporting on this, so I won’t go into it as much. I just hope that everyone here takes a moment to enjoy this.
Some people wonder why the Rs running to replace tRump don’t attack him. Of course, a few have done this, notably Chris Christie, with vengeful glee, and Mike Pence, because he’s not going to be able to get out of testifying against the boss who sent a mob to murder him, with reluctant sanctimoniousness. In fact, Mike Pence has actually finally been sending off a few zingers, including calling tRump’s lawyers a gaggle of crackpots:
x Pence: “It wasn't that they asked for a pause. The president specifically asked me — and his gaggle of crack pot lawyers — to literally reject votes, which would have resulted in the issue being turned over to the House of Representatives and literally chaos would have ensued.” pic.twitter.com/LJHyqhmNd4 — Kaitlan Collins (@kaitlancollins) August 2, 2023
Most are not attacking, however. Why? Because of the base. tRump is not going to go quietly, and his base is a force that can make or break GOP primaries.
Still, there’s signs that some of his power may be waning. tRump raised a lot of money off his first indictment, but much less off his second. Jessica Piper, Politico
All told, Trump raised nearly $4 million via WinRed from nearly 80,000 distinct donors April 4, the day he pleaded not guilty in a Manhattan court on charges of falsification of business records related to payouts to porn star Stormy Daniels. It was his best online fundraising day of the year. By contrast, when Trump appeared in Miami court June 13 to plead not guilty to his second indictment on charges related to classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago, he raised only $1.3 million from just over 35,0000 donors, according to WinRed data.
It’s too soon to say what is happening with his third, but above is a huge drop off. Also, protesters didn’t show up the way tRump demanded. According to The Daily Beast, (Justin Rohrlich and Jose Pagliery) the turnout for the DC arraignment was weak.
Turnout was weak outside the courthouse as Trump arrived at his arraignment in the same D.C. courthouse in which countless MAGA faithful have been prosecuted for their roles in the failed attempt to keep Trump in power. By most counts, only a small handful of people showed up to support Trump, far from the ravenous crowds he had apparently been hoping for. The disgraced one-termer arrived via motorcade before heading inside the E. Barrett Prettyman federal courthouse to be processed by the U.S. Marshals Service. While inside, a large contingent of uniformed police milled about outside, chatting, in the absence of much, if any, turmoil.
What is true, I believe, is that outside of the base, most of these politicians hate tRump. Something like 90% of the people who worked for him loathed him afterwards. They just want someone else to take him out so that they can maintain a good relationship with the base.
Still, we don’t want the Rs to recover too quickly. Few have shown they are fit to govern, so it’s better if they have a long time out. To quote Lindsey Graham: "If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed ... and we will deserve it."
Some of them deserve a lot more, of course. Newly revealed text messages show that other GOP officials were involved Hunter Walker Talking Points Memo,
Ward’s role in efforts to reverse the election result has previously drawn the scrutiny of investigators. While McDaniel helped the Trump campaign publicly question the results in the first week after the election, the RNC chairwoman has — prior to the indictment — largely avoided being seen as a key player in the plot. These newly revealed messages provide far greater detail than was previously known about the part these two GOP officials played in the scheme at the very moment the special counsel has pegged as the major turning point.
Now, these are Ronna McDaniel and Kelli Ward, and Ronna McDaniel is now finding out that telling your voters that elections are rigged is not a way to encourage them to show up to vote. However, it’s an uphill battle.
After stoking conspiracy theories about the vote in 2020, McDaniel is currently leading an RNC initiative that seems designed to mitigate the damage false claims about the integrity of the elections has had on Republican turnout. That effort has been backed by several figures — including Trump himself — who fueled the “Big Lie” that his 2020 loss was not legitimate. McDaniel and an RNC spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment on this story.
I wonder if tRump's attitude will have the same effect?
Speaking of McDaniel’s home state, Michigan tRump allies who tampered with voting machines are indicted Joey Cappelletti, Associated Press
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Two Michigan allies of former President Donald Trump, including a former Republican state attorney general candidate, were charged in connection with an effort to illegally access and tamper with voting machines in the state after the 2020 election, prosecutors announced Tuesday. Attorney Matthew DePerno was charged with undue possession of a voting machine and conspiracy, while Daire Rendon, a former Republican state representative, was charged with conspiracy to commit undue possession of a voting machine and false pretenses, special prosecutor D.J. Hilson announced in a news release. Both were arraigned Tuesday afternoon, according to Richard Lynch, the court administrator for Oakland County’s 6th Circuit.

🚚 💙 Democrats Deliver 💙 🚚
From the White House Briefing Room, specifically the fact sheet on investing in high-speed internet: Some of the results of government investing in America — others are investing in America!
Just as Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Rural Electrification Act brought electricity to nearly every home and farm in America, President Biden and Vice President Harris are delivering on their historic commitment to connect everyone in America to affordable, reliable high-speed internet by the end of the decade. The Biden-Harris Administration’s historic Internet For All initiative is investing $90 billion to bring affordable, reliable high-speed internet service to every community in America is creating good-paying manufacturing jobs and revitalizing the domestic broadband manufacturing industry. Other recent private sector domestic manufacturing announcements include: Corning, a producer of optical fiber and cable, celebrated the expansion of its U.S. manufacturing capacity with the opening of a new manufacturing campus near Hickory, North Carolina. The more than $500 million investment to build fiber in the U.S. adds hundreds of manufacturing jobs to Corning’s more than 5,000 employees in the state.
CommScope , a provider of broadband network equipment, recently announced a $60 million investment towards expanding its U.S. fiber optic cable manufacturing at its facility in Catawba, North Carolina. This investment will create more than 250 new jobs over the next five years, and create a fiber optic cable, “HeliARC” which is specifically designed for rural fiber network architecture.

This investment will create more than 250 new jobs over the next five years, and create a fiber optic cable, “HeliARC” which is specifically designed for rural fiber network architecture. Prysmian, a manufacturer of optical fiber and fiber optic cable, announced a $30 million investment to convert its Jackson, Tennessee, copper cable facility into a state-of-the-art fiber optic cable manufacturing plant. As part of this plant retrofitting, Prysmian transitioned their workforce, retraining and retaining nearly 90% of employees. Prysmian has made a significant effort to hire and train female manufacturing workers, who make up 42% of plant employees compared to an industry average of about 25%. Buy Americarequirements are key to ensuring we maximize the economic potential of the Internet for All initiative. Manufacturing the iron, steel, fiber, and construction materials needed to deliver affordable, reliable high-speed internet service to millions of Americans is an opportunity to create jobs right here at home. Funds for the BEAD program will be used to purchase items manufactured in the U.S., such as iron, steel, and fiber. Additional specific rules for spending BEAD program funds are forthcoming. As President Biden said in his State of the Union address, “We’re making sure that every community — every community in America has access to affordable, high-speed Internet… I’m also announcing new standards to require all construction materials used in federal infrastructure projects to be made in America. Made in America. I mean it. Lumber, glass, drywall, fiber-optic cable.”
Honestly, I can understand why Fitch downgraded us. But if we stay blue for a few more years, we’ll be OK.
Minnesota just shoving it in the face of other blue states — what is this, some kind of contest? Doktor Zoom, Wonkette
In last year’s midterms, the great state of Minnesota (Motto: “Not Quite Canada, Sorry”) was among several states that picked up Democratic trifectas when the state Senate flipped to the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party, giving Dems, Farms, and Labs their first unified control of state government since 2013. And just like Michigan has gone full socialist woke wonderland under Democratic leadership, so has the Land of 10,000 Knudsons (and many Hmong and Somali last names too), with Gov. Tim Walz signing into law a passel of progressive measures passed by the new Lege. Let us count the ways in which just this year, Minnesota is becoming a veritable Belgium On Lake Superior. (Maybe Norway or the Netherlands is more leftish. But “Belgium” is definitely funnier.)
Ways include Paid Family and Medical Leave, Abortion Rights, Food for Kids at School, Legal Weed, Trans Rights, and so much more! Hooray, Minnesota!
Offshore wind could meet half of Maine’s needs by 2040 Paige Bennett EcoWatch
Offshore wind energy is getting a major boost in Maine, which has just approved adding 3,000 megawatts of energy provided by offshore wind turbines by 2040. The 3,000 megawatts would be enough to meet about half of Maine’s electricity demand. Maine Governor Janet Mills signed the law, LD 1895, on Thursday, noting the legislation would contribute to port development with inclusions to still protect lobster fishing areas. “Offshore wind, done responsibly, offers Maine the opportunity to secure abundant clean energy, stable energy prices, good-paying jobs, and a healthier environment for future generations,” Mills said in a statement.

Doctors are working to get abortion care to states Cassandra Jaramillo, ProPublica
In her eight years as a pediatrician, Dr. Lauren Beene had always stayed out of politics. What happened at the Statehouse had little to do with the children she treated in her Cleveland practice. But after the Supreme Court struck down abortion protections, that all changed. The first Monday after the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling was emotional. Beene fielded a call from the mother of a 13-year-old patient. The mother was worried her child might need birth control in case she was the victim of a sexual assault. Beene also talked to a 16-year-old patient unsure about whether to continue her pregnancy. Time wasn’t on her side, Beene told the girl. ✂️ Beene felt she had to do something. She drafted a letter to a state lawmaker about the dangers of abortion bans, then another doctor reached out with an idea to get dozens of doctors to sign on. The effort took off. About 1,000 doctors signed that letter, and they later published it as a full-page ad in The Columbus Dispatch. ✂️ The group is a part of an emerging political force: doctors on the front lines of the reproductive rights debate. In many states, the fight to protect reproductive rights is heating up as 14 states have outlawed abortion. Doctors who previously never mixed work with politics are jumping into the abortion debate by lobbying state lawmakers, campaigning, forming political action committees and trying to get reproductive rights protected by state law.
The article discusses Ohio, but also Texas, Kansas, Nebraska and other states.

Tax-exempt organization complaint referrals. 13909. You can fill this out for the NRA and lots of other organizations. How about if some of us white folk go into some of the MAGA churches and video record what they’re saying?
Voting rights. This may be the biggest issue threatening our democracy right now. Besides contacting your representatives at the state and federal level to do the right thing (depending on who they are), you can support and contact these organizations:
ACLU — American Civil Liberties Union

Fair Fight — founded by Stacey Abrams
🌱Grass roots. Biden and Harris can do the top-down stuff, but we have to support from the bottom. I don’t know how to deprogram 75 million people, but some things have been written about, such as deep canvassing, and lots of people are talking about this. If you know someone (who did not storm the Capitol), then see if you can be pleasant. Instead of trying to reason with them (logic is obviously not their strong point) distract them with something else. We need to remove the sources of lies and to take down the temperature. If we get more of the Rs to wear masks and to get vaccinated and to vote for Ds, the country will be a better place. We need to coax some of them out of the rabbit holes and diffuse the anger and the crazy.
🏃 Run for something. If you want to run for something, but have no idea what to do, these people will help you. They also like money and volunteers to help those people who are running, so even if you’re not in a position to stand for office, you can help. Note: they are especially planning to target the 57 Rs in local governments who participated in the insurrection.

Who has flipped on tRump? David McAfee, Raw Story, quoting Michael Cohen
"In fact, I think the more important thing in this indictment to look at, are not who the six co-conspirators are, but rather who is missing from this indictment. For example, you don't see any mention of Mark Meadows," he said before mentioning the former president's son-in-law. "You see nothing of Jared Kushner. Jared Kushner was the secretary of everything. How is it possible that he is not listed here? He was there, on Donald's lap, the entire time, from the day Donald entered the white house to the day that he left." Asked how he explains that, Cohen said, "I believe he is probably a cooperating witness."
Ken Paxton, suspended AG, had a court meeting about his securities fraud. Juan Lozano, Associated Press
HOUSTON (AP) — Embattled Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s years-delayed trial on securities fraud charges will have to wait until his separate impeachment trial is concluded, lawyers and the judge in the case said Thursday. ✂️ Wice said he shares the public’s frustration that the case has yet to go to trial. Paxton was indicted in 2015 on felony charges of defrauding investors in a tech startup. “I know that everybody is concerned about how the wheels of justice have seemed to move at a glacial pace over the course of the last eight years,” Wice said. “I think today is the first step on the journey of a thousand miles to pick up the pace.”
The impeachment trial is in September, so it’s not a large delay, but it should have happened years ago. It’s frustrating that these criminals have been allowed out so long. We all believe tRump was criming for years and should have been arrested before running for office. Ditto with Paxton.
NY AG Letitia James says she’s ready for trial Graham Kates, CBS News
New York Attorney General Letitia James' office says it is ready to proceed with a trial stemming from its $250 million lawsuit claiming former President Donald Trump, two of his children and his company engaged in widespread fraud. "The case is ready for trial," wrote Kevin Wallace, senior enforcement counsel for the office, in a filing Monday. The September 2022 lawsuit accused members of the Trump family and Trump Organization executives of orchestrating an extensive fraudulent scheme related to valuations of property and Trump's personal financial statements. Allegations against Ivanka Trump have since been dismissed by a New York appeals court.
This is a general favorite, so I’m including it here, where it is most suitable:
📣 Let’s Honor Truth ☀️️
This week we really have to hand it to Jack Smith and his team. And by team, I mean not just the prosecutors working with him, but the January 6th Committee in the House (the prior House), and Nancy Pelosi who helped put it together.
There’s also a really yummy rumor going around:

📚 Attempt to ban the pride books in San Diego backfires Jill Cowan, The New York Times via Yahoo News
Adrianne Peterson, the manager of the Rancho Peñasquitos branch of the San Diego Public Library, was actually a little embarrassed by the modest size of her Pride Month display in June. Between staff vacations and organizing workshops for graduating high school students, it had fallen through the cracks and fell short of what she had hoped to offer. ✂️ Ms. Peterson, who has run the library branch since 2012 and highlighted books for Pride Month for the better part of a decade, was taken aback when she read an email last month from two neighborhood residents. They informed her that they had gotten nearly all of the books in the Pride display checked out and would not return them unless the library permanently removed what they considered “inappropriate content.” “It was just kind of like, ‘Whoa, curveball,’” Ms. Peterson said. “I began to wonder, ‘Oh, have I been misunderstanding our community?’” Soon, she would get her answer: Stacks of Amazon boxes containing new copies of the books the protesters checked out started to arrive at the library after The San Diego Union-Tribune reported on the protest. Roughly 180 people, mostly San Diegans, gave more than $15,000 to the library system, which after a city match will provide over $30,000 toward more L.G.B.T.Q.-themed materials and programming, including an expansion of the system’s already popular drag queen story hours.

Hydroponics and pastoralism in the desert Vandana K., Reasons to Be Cheerful
In pastoralist communities, a majority of the work managing livestock is done by women and children, says Aakriti Srivastava, founder of Bahula Naturals, a startup that works with small farmers and herders in the region to market their products. Palu embodies this reality. “I take care of all the animals by myself,” she says of the eight cows and goats that she tends to five hours a day — bathing, feeding and milking them; cleaning the shed; and collecting fodder for them. Until recently, collecting this fodder was no easy task. In the afternoons, Palu would walk to her farm, located four miles away, to collect fresh fodder. After cutting the grasses and crops grown especially for animal feed, she would fill a large sack and carry the load back on her head. It was backbreaking work carried out in scorching heat. ✂️ At the organization’s campus near Bikaner city, Palu learned how to grow fresh fodder in trays with very little water and no soil in a semi-controlled environment. Since Palu already had empty land around her house that her family owned, Urmul Seemant Samiti undertook the construction of the barn-like structure that’s now next door. Hydrogreens, a startup that has been working to promote hydroponic fodder in India since 2016, and which has partnered with Bahula to set up fodder stations, built Palu’s hydroponic farming machines. Last year, for the first time, Palu’s hydroponic fodder station began sprouting food for her animals, eliminating the need to travel great distances to fetch fresh fodder for them. Not only that, ever since Palu began to feed hydroponic wheat and maize to her cows and goats, she’s noticed they’ve become more productive, producing up to a quart more milk each — milk that is richer than it used to be. And the goats have put on weight.
🐦 I do a lot of other writing.
