Write Your Senator/Congressperson: Trial of Ex-President for Subverting Election Must Be Televised [1]

Today I wrote to both senators of my state and to my congresswoman, asking that they raise their voices and do all possible to encourage televising the trial of the former president for conspiracy to subvert the 2020 Presidential Election and related crimes. It is the most important criminal trial in American history, and many low-information voters will lack confidence in both the process and the result if they think the trial is held in darkness. We should want the public to see and hear the evidence as it is presented.
The Sixth Amendment requires “the right to a speedy and public trial” — of course, the “public” part is a right held not only of the defendant and the prosecution but also by the public. While the founders did not foresee TV (let alone streaming), it is the central fact of our news-consuming lives for the past 75 years. In most people’s minds, an open courtroom means TV cameras should be permitted. (Most states permit TV cameras in court; New York does not, but that may change soon via legislation now under consideration.)
If readers of this post are similarly inclined, please write to your senators and congressperson. I did not use any invective or rant against the defendant, as I believe that would be counterproductive to the purpose here. Here is what I wrote:
The criminal trial of a former president for subverting a national election through fraud is the most important trial in American history. It should be in the sunlight. Too many low-information voters are not going to have confidence in the result if it is in a closed courtroom. Please do whatever you can to get judiciary to require that the trial be televised.
Please use your own words (more effective). I am given to understand that the presiding judge does not have the discretion to permit TV cameras, but a judicial panel does. A groundswell of support for an open courtroom — open to TV cameras — would help enormously in heightening the chances of a trial in the sunlight, so important to public confidence in the process and the result.
Here is the link to contacting your senator, and the link to contacting your member of the House.
