White to move and mate in two #387 -- My 60 Memorable Games [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Selected and fully annotated

by Bobby Fischer

with Introductions to the games by International Grandmaster Larry Evans

All of the 60 here offered contain, for me, something memorable and exciting — even the 3 losses. I have tried to be both candid and precise in my elucidations in the hope that they would offer insights into chess that will lead to fuller understanding and better play.

Losing! A couple of hours after the game it occurred to me that White has a problem-like win after 20 Qf4!! (with the threat of Rh5). Black has no adequate defense:

A] 20 … d5; 21 Qe5, Nf6; 22 Rxf6, Bxf6; 23 Qxf6!

B] 20 … Nd2+; 21 Rxd2, cxd2; 22 c3!!, Qxb3; 23 Bxg7+, Kxg7; 24 Qg4+, Kh8; 25 Qd4+ and mates.

C] 20 … cxb2; 21 Rh5! (threatening Bxg7+), Nc3+; ….

--Bobby Fischer

The analysis for C] will be left to the reader(s). Note, the original edition used descriptive notation, but other editions with algebraic have appeared and were adapted a little to the notation seen and encouraged in our #ChessPuzzle diaries.
