Reacting to Trump's latest indictment, MT Greene tells "the American people" to turn to God [1]

“I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: Oh Lord, make my enemies ridiculous. And God granted it" ― Voltaire
A reasonable citizen should be excused for thinking that the more immoral an American is, the more likely it is that the offending ‘patriot’ will drag God into the conversation. Every time a conservative Christian politician is caught having illicit or immoral sex with someone other than their spouse or is exposed as a criminal, they are soon in front of the cameras, wet-cheeked, with their hapless spouse to hand, blubbering about how God will make it all better. And then they slink off, primed to sin another day.
Marjorie Greene, in whom the milk of human kindness has curdled and whose personal life is Old Testament in its moral turpitude, is no exception. This benighted woman reacted to the news that the serially-indicted, one still pending, Trump had been found potentially guilty of anti-democracy adventurism by a DC Grand Jury, with her usual meretricious rambling. She appealed to “the American people’ to put their faith in God.
She explained her thinking to the host of ‘Real America’s Voice’s Human Events with Jack Posobiec.’ This law and order conservative started by saying she wanted to defund the police. In this case, Jack Smith and the FBI’s new headquarters. In her words,
“We have to defund Jack Smith’s special counsel.” Adding, “I will not vote to fund the FBI’s new headquarters. I refuse to do that. I will not vote to fund a weaponized government in any form in the FBI and Department of Justice.
The FBI’s job is to hunt down criminals. The taxpayers pay the prosecutors at the DOJ to prosecute criminals. Greene’s defunding plan rests on her contention these functions have been “weaponized”. Really? Let us say the FBI & DOJ are politically biased — I know it is absurd, but bear with me for the sake of argument — they are not the only players in Trump’s legal drama.
The ultimate authority in a federal court case is the district judge, whose work is subject to review by the relevant appeals court and ultimately by the US Supreme Court. Trump apologists say that DC is a liberal swamp, but that inherent bias argument collapses in Florida. There, the district judge, Aileen Cannon, was picked by Trump. And she has already put her thumb on the justice scale for him.
Her work is graded by the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, to which Trump appointed six judges. And the Supreme Court has three Justices picked by Trump and another three conservative choices.
Trump is not an indigent Black man. He is a white billionaire with millions of donors and the backing of one of the two major political parties. The Constitution gives him extensive rights. And the prosecution has to convince all 12 jurors — one dissident would sink the enterprise — that Trump is guilty, beyond a reasonable doubt. The jurors in Florida will be from Fort Pierce, which is in Florida’s 21st Congressional District. A district that voted for Trump by 27%. And if the result does not go his way, Trump can appeal.
If Trump is innocent, he has nothing to worry about. Although, in fairness to Greene, she may be too ignorant to know how the US criminal justice system works. And too dumb to understand the DOJ alone cannot railroad an innocent man with money.
But she is not alone. She said,
“Matt Gaetz is aligned with me on that as well. We both talked about it [defunding the FBI] and are working on it.
She is going to need more than Gaetz. Unfortunately for her, that is all she has. She admits that they don’t have the support in the House or Senate.
“I gotta tell you, we don’t have a lot of people with us.”
I am sure that she has not considered why she lacks support. There are plenty of Republicans who are slamming Jack Smith and the FBI. But it is merely for the performance. Bluster is useful. But an actual vote to defund the FBI has extraordinary political risk. While the GOP is weak on felony when the perp is Trump, their brand is “tough on crime.” The dissonance of complaining about high crime rates under Biden combined with a vote to defund law enforcement will not herd independents into the right-wing fold.
This lack of temporal backing leaves the Divine. Greene offers her thoughts on the subject.
“Our real hope needs to be in God. And Jesus Christ is my savior. And I know he is yours as well. And God has plans much bigger than this. And I believe in the American people also, Jack, I believe their power is much bigger than mine. I’m only one member of Congress. But the American people when they really feel like they want to make a difference, I really believe they can.”
As with everything else, Greene has not thought this through. A believer could equally well argue that God knows Trump is guilty and is working through His agent, Jack Smith, along with Jack's prosecutors and the grand juries to punish the sinner. And further, the American people made a difference when they really felt like it in 2020. They voted with a 7-million majority to make Biden President.
It is self-serving to believe that God can interfere in human affairs and then claim he is not doing so when you see something you disagree with. Greene may think that Jesus is her savior. But I have yet to hear Jesus offer his opinion about Trump. So I will have to settle for actions speaking louder than words and assume Christ and his Dad are never-Trumpers.
