With decoy cruise missiles you can launch a swarm of 20 or so at a target with only 5 being armed and let the Russians waste their air defense missiles on the decoys.

x Ukraine has created a decoy cruise missile that will exhaust Russian air defense

x A group of Ukrainians making 3D-printed bombs has produced more than 30.000 bombs in the past 4 months while the production increased. Another group makes cases for 800-gram anti-personnel bombs and said they make about 1,000 bombs a weekhttps://t.co/YERifhrkdL — NOELREPORTS 🇪🇺 🇺🇦 (@NOELreports) August 2, 2023

Hand grenades are designed to be thrown, so they are light. But when they are dropped from drones, this can be a drawback. With a typical weight of just 300 grams, grenades are short on “killing power”, says a man nicknamed “Lyosha”, who is an amateur weapons-maker based in Kyiv. After one goes off, he says, targeted Russian soldiers “often just keep running”. Three months ago Lyosha and a group of friends, working in their homes, designed an alternative: an 800-gram anti-personnel bomb called the “Zaychyk”, or “Rabbit”. The group uses 3d printing to produce the bomb’s casing, before sending it to be filled with C4, an explosive, and pieces of steel shrapnel. In tests, Lyosha says, this shrapnel cuts into wooden planks “like butter”.

That’s still a lot of missiles left, but if Russia keeps firing them at the rate they did in July this stockpile won’t last too much longer. Kyiv has a Patriot system that can intercept all of these cruise missiles but other cities like Odesa don’t. Ukraine needs several more Patriot systems.

x ⚡️ Air defense forces shot down 70% of air targets launched over Ukraine during July, Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.

In total, russians used 415 missiles and drones. Among them: 54 "Kalibr", 41 Kh-101/555, 20 "Onix", 4 "Kyndzhal", 265 "Shaheds".

Interesting thread on why Ukraine hasn’t been able to neutralize Russia’s helicopter base in Berdyansk on the coast.

x 2/ The russian air threat persists in this counter-offensive, demanding additional consideration. One strategy involves neutralizing helicopters on the ground before they take flight. While the airfield is within Ukraine's long-range capabilities, the situation is more complex pic.twitter.com/lkU5bjVzTS — Tatarigami_UA (@Tatarigami_UA) August 2, 2023

The rest of the thread:

3/ One major challenge is the significant spacing between helicopters, making it difficult to effectively target them with a single missile. Given the limited availability of long-range weapons, using a missile that may or may not destroy some Mi-24s becomes hard to justify. 4/ The reason why I use "may or may not" is due to the presence of substantial air defense systems both inside and outside the airport perimeter. This means that launching a missile doesn't guarantee success, as it could face countermeasures. 5/ Other options, like a massive missile launch combined with drones to overwhelm defenses, may seem viable, but cost-efficiency becomes a significant concern in such scenarios. This is where GLSDB (Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb) can prove highly valuable 6/ The weapon's operational range, relatively low cost (compared to ATACMS or Stormshadow), and capability to evade specific countermeasures make it a potential game-changer in situations like this

The trauma of this war, in Mariupol and elsewhere, will live on long after the war is over.

Here is the text of the above tweet.

I was chatting with my mom’s friend and she told me about a woman from Mariupol she met. The woman herself lives in the US and when the war started she lost all contact with her sister for over 3 months. When she finally reconnected with her she found out that her sister and her kids spend weeks sheltering from the Russian invaders in the tunnels of Azovstal. Oftentimes thirsty and hungry. I don't know how the woman managed to get her sister and her kids out of Mariupol, but they are safe now. However, her sister’s youngest child who’s only 6 years old has serious psychological damage… This is just one Ukrainian story out of millions. If the civilized free world doesn’t throw all its might behind Ukraine there will be more and more stories like this one… Stories of traumatized people and children scarred for life…
