My mother kept a small handbound journal filled with quotations that she found inspiring, including some she made up herself. When I inherited this book, I was inspired to add one of my own:
“When people laugh at you for naming your car, or arguing with recalcitrant machinery, remind them that it is far better to treat things as people than people as things. When a person becomes a thing, that is the first step on the road to slavery, death marches, and concentration camps.”
We are all humans together. There is no acceptable reason to treat anybody as a thing. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of race, gender or sexual preference/identity. I am so sick of reading about the ways in which our society-or at least a certain portion of it-is trying to undo all the good (which in itself was insufficient, but at least a start) that has been accomplished since the 1960s. I am alone and living on the ragged edge of disaster. There is not a whole lot I can do to change what is happening in this country, but what I can do I will. PEOPLE. ARE. NOT. THINGS. Go out there and prove that to the world every day you are able.
