Kitchen Table Kibitzing ~7.31.23 ~ self-driving cars [1]

Apparently, I have a self-driving car. I had no clue. I was in my car this weekend, ok, well, I wasn’t 100% in my car, my body was inside, in the driver's seat, belted up for safety, but my mind was definitely not in the car.

It seems that my car just took over. While my mind wandered my car wandered. Into the lane to the left of me. A very smooth wander, as if I were changing lanes. I noticed that my left blinker was on, but it had probably been on for a mile and a half or so, who knows?

So, I’m cruising in the middle-left lane on a 4-lane interstate highway; zen driving, like a buddha behind the wheel, when I notice a little hot rod weaving in and out of traffic, passing everyone. Right behind this hotrod was a minivan hot on its trail.

It was an odd scene. I looked down wondering how fast they were going as they flew by me. I was going 90 (my car was, at any rate) so they were going 100 or more.

Thinking about how my car seems to be taking over I realized that I’m putting $40 of gas per week in this car. That’s one thing I don’t like about it, only 27 miles per gallon. I’m going through so much gas each week though, I wonder if my car is going out at night, driving without me?!?

And just like with manufacturing and everything else AI is trying to replicate that humans do; it will soon be remembered that one important component that AI can’t add is… soul.
