In the channel that feeds the marsh lives at least one turtle. From the expression on our buddy’s face in the title photo; it’s Summertime and the living is easy.

I visited the same marsh near the Water Valley airport (highlighted on a previous diary). The link is:

Morning in a Mississippi marsh

I was greeted by many of the same residents that I met before. The Slaty Skimmers still occupied the skies, the Cardinals, Indigo Buntings and Red-wing Blackbirds sang from hidden perches and the Cicada challenged the Cricket Tree frogs to a duel of rhythmic buzzing. Things were just as they were when I was there last.

There were a few new citizens of the area that came by to meet me. A young female Prothonotary Warbler wanted to show me her hunting skills.

A Heron stopped by, we had met during my last visit.

A larger relative flew over and landed in a Cypress.

A young Green Heron slipped from the reeds and began it’s search for breakfast. Flicking it’s tail and with a determined look in it’s eye, the pickings were made quickly.

I took several still photos of the Heron before I noticed another movement beyond the hunting bird. A pair of eyes glinted in the shadows. The bird moved along unaware and unruffled, but I stayed focused on the glowing orbs.

In the muted light (left of the Heron’s head) alert eyes appear

I had my answer soon enough. It was another visitor to the marsh seeking it’s own breakfast. The bandit mask hid it’s identity until the sun revealed it’s form.

The morning droned on and my thoughts muddied like the slurry under the watery plants. I shook myself awake enough to gather my gear and head for home. On the way to the truck a golden opportunity presented itself.

The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns. We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.
