Kitchen Table Kibitzing 7/29/23: Tomorrow's voters [1]

Tonight I will be at friend’s house hopefully enjoying his pool at the Jersey shore, so my original intent was to leave this as an open thread. However, in browsing the internet I found this opinion piece about Generation Z voters which I think is quite positive.

It’s by Santiago Mayer, founder of an organization called Voters of Tomorrow, and titled “Gen Z will be an unbeatable force in 2024 – if we stand together in face of the far right.”

Coincidentally, the organization was featured on DailyKos, earlier today.

Santiago immigrated to this country in 2017, the first year the nation was experiencing Donald Trump. While the rest of us were reacting to Trump’s Muslim ban and other outrages from the standpoint of regular voters, Mayer was surrounded by teenagers who felt they had no power to change what was happening around them, even though they wanted to. As a new American citizen he wanted to see what this country’s political establishment had to offer young people.

From the right, the message was not particularly inspiring: he cites the right-wing Turning Point org and its recent conference which he says sought (in theory) to engage young people, but “paint[ed] a much more disturbing reality of not only what the far right wants young people to believe, but also why the far right is on track to lose an entire generation of voters.”

At the conference, a majority-white-male speaker lineup preached divisiveness, promoted fear and sowed outrage to a white-dominated and older audience – all while claiming to represent my generation’s values. Take, for instance, former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson, who told the audience, “You have a right to decide who you hate.” Former President Donald Trump also doubled down on his anti-democratic views, attacking recent indictments and promising to institute a “bigger” and "much stronger" travel ban if reelected.
