I am finished reading:

Hermit in Paris by Italo Calvino - I don’t why the tarot card for The Hermit didn’t occur to me in contemplating the title of this book; Calvino brings it up in a transcribed interview in here and I believe that The Tarot was the subject of one of his novels.

This posthumously published collection of essays was good...not great with the exception of his American Diary 1959-60...and he went everywhere in America and the country made quite the impression...that essay/diary was a stand-alone book itself. Calvino’s impression of the southwest (New Mexico, Arizona, etc.) reminded me a little of Patricia Highsmith’s. And...he was present when Dr. King, Ralph Abernathy and others had a “council-of-war” meeting in Montgomery in 1959...

(I only hate that this book jumped the “I am reading” pile.)

American Poverty has a particular colour which I have now learned to recognize: it is the burnt red colour of brick buildings or the faded colour of wooden houses which have become slums.

Could San Francisco’s secret be that it is a city of aristocracies?

I am reading:

Valis by Philip K. Dick

Come Back in September: A Literary Education on West Sixty-Seventh Street, Manhattan by Darryl Pinckney
