What Ron DeSantis can learn from my trip to Comic-Con. [1]

Dear Daily Kos family:

Last weekend, I traveled from South Carolina to San Diego Comic-Con, where I had a fantastic time helping some talented artists promote a forthcoming graphic novel about my great-great-grandfather: Civil War hero and Recontruction-era Congressman Robert Smalls.

At a time when Republican politicians like Ron DeSantis are seeking to rewrite our nation’s history — exploiting partisan divides at the expense of our children’s education — I believe it’s more important than ever for leaders to embrace the totality of America’s legacy.

Part of that important work is elevating the stories of lesser-known patriots like Robert Smalls, who — in the face of unfathomable hardship — never stopped working to make America a more perfect Union.
