Dear Daily Kos family:
Last week, I expressed solidarity with the striking workers of the Waffle House on Garners Ferry Road in Columbia, South Carolina, and called on MAGA Rep. Nancy Mace to join me in supporting their commonsense demands.
As a business executive with nearly four decades of private sector experience — including several years as a leader in South Carolina’s food industry — I know firsthand that employees throughout any organization deserve fair pay and safe working conditions.
I steadfastly stand behind the striking staff of the Waffle House on Garners Ferry Road as they seek sensible concessions from management and strive for a better quality of life for restaurant workers in South Carolina.
I also continue to urge Nancy Mace — who often mentions her past experience as a Waffle House waitress on the campaign trail — to similarly endorse the demands of those on strike.
x Started from Waffle House now we here 🧇. I learned a lot in my time working at Waffle House. Now I take that same grit and determination to the House of Representatives. Donate to my campaign today to get your exclusive inspired campaign swag -->

It’s not enough to only talk about the value of work when running for office. Real leaders need to match their rhetoric with a commitment to labor rights.
In case you missed it, workers of the Waffle House on Garners Ferry Road began a three-day strike on July 8 after delivering to management their petition to organize. Among the workers’ demands are fair scheduling practices, increased security during shifts, and an end to the policy of meal deductions. Waffle House staff have also raised concerns about unruly behavior and threats of violence from customers.
On July 14, the Post and Courier reported that the Waffle House workers were facing retaliation from management and that the Union of Southern Service Workers — which represents the employees — had filed an unfair labor practices complaint with the National Labor Relations Board.
The USSW also supported the workers of a Dollar General in Irmo, South Carolina, who went on strike in January. The Waffle House strike comes after the Starbucks on Columbia’s Millwood Avenue became the third location in South Carolina to unionize in June 2022.
Nancy Mace has previously been critical of labor unions, claiming they cause “productivity issues.” Last year, she earned a score of just 15 percent from the AFL-CIO after voting against working people nearly a dozen times in Congress. Her lifetime score from the federation is six percent.
If you support labor rights and believe it’s time for a pro-union leader to represent South Carolina’s 1st district in Congress, please donate to our campaign today
If I’m elected, I’ll stand up for all workers across the Lowcountry. That’s a promise.
Sincerely,
Michael
