The Naval Destroyer Museum in Bremerton, Washington features the U.S.S. Turner Joy Museum Ship. The Turner Joy was commissioned in 1959 and decommissioned in 1982.

According to the Museum:

“The Turner Joy is a Destroyer, a warship known for its speed and guns! Destroyers were known as ‘Greyhounds of the sea’ and also as ‘Tin Cans’ due to their lightweight construction.”

The Turner Joy was engaged in the first combat action in the Vietnam War and provided naval gunfire support for troops ashore for nine years. The Turner Joy is also credited with firing the last naval round of the Vietnam War from a U.S. warship.

With regard to the Gulf of Tonkin “incident”, the signage on the Turner Joy reports that on August 2, 1964, the destroyer USS Maddox was reportedly attacked by three North Vietnamese torpedo boats while in international waters. Two days later, the USS Turner Joy was reportedly attacked by four high-speed torpedo boats. While the Turner Joy reported sinking two boats and damaging the other two, no wreckage was ever found.

Shown below are some photographs of the engine room of the Turner Joy.
