That was the thought that popped into my head when I read about the curriculum changes in Florida regarding slavery, i.e., it wasn't all bad because blacks learned job skills from their masters. How conservatives got there, and how I got to that additional step, was a bit of a mystery to me, so I decided to sort through it.
Republican reasoning always reminds me of that Monty Python and The Holy Grail scene in which the king uses impeccable logic to conclude that if an accused witch weighs the same as a duck, she's guilty. It's all about kooky assumptions.
There was a scene in a Mark Harmon rom-com, Worth Winning, in which Harmon is belittling a fop's predictability by playing a game called name that segue. The fop and Harmon, playing Taylor, are vying for the interest of a woman played by Madeleine Stowe.
Fop: Nice sweater, Taylor. It's very
Brooks brothers. Oh. Are you still
having trouble with your BMW? Harmon: I can name that segue in 5 words. Stowe: Name that segue. Harmon: Sweater. Cold. Alps. Germany. BMW.
So how exactly did conservatives go from their economic assumptions to slavery as opportunity? I can name that segue in five steps:
Wealthy people own businesses. Businesses create jobs. Southern plantations were businesess. Slavery was a government sponsored program plantations used to create jobs for Africans, to the exclusion of Europeans. Those jobs provided skills and opportunities Africans would have otherwise never had.
Et voilĂ , slavery was America's first Affirmative Action program. The left are just upset because the new curriculum credits conservatives with the idea first.
The whole involuntary servitude thing with beatings, deprivation, rape, etc, were just the price of opportunity. It's not like the lives of other workers were a bed of roses back then either. There's a another Monty Python sketch that addresses those complaints.
